Steptoe head guards rubber strips

I have managed to source a pair of what looks like Steptoe's valve head cover guards from eBay but they have no rubber strips fitted to them. My questions are they needed and if so where would I source such items?

I wondered if a bungee strap could be used but worried it might melt being in contact with the head cover.

The rubber cord stops the guards from rubbing against and scratching the valve covers. I think I still have a few hundred metres tucked away in a box somewhere . I’ll have a look over the next couple of days. If I find the box I’ll pm you and send you some .

You wouldn’t also have some guards left lying around in a box too..?

Just spent a wonderful 30 minutes searching in the garage loft. Found many things I’d forgotten I had, including new 1100/1150 cylinder head ( had them so long I’ve forgotten which model) . But no luck finding the head guard rubber cord, sorry

I should thank you, I also found a box of 3000 cable ties I’d forgotten I had, plus 2 boxes of AA batteries

You could try the sticky backed rolls of insulated draught excluder. But rubber cord is perfect. I can’t remember the diameter needed, think it might be 5mm. Fill the indents on the inside of the headguards silicone sealant and push in the cord (cut to size) .. job done , it’s available on eBay and very cheap

yes , line them up , bolt them on.

if you need guidance for fitting them , maybe you need an adult to do it.

Fit the rear bolt first, but not tight, then gently push the front to line up the front bolt, There were two types of guard, one had the lower/bottom arm drilled that fits under the cylinder, the other wasn’t drilled. If you have the drilled version don’t bother bolting it. The guard will stay in place without it bolted, even if you should slide down the road,

I've still got a pair of Stantons - I always found that the hardest bolt to get lined up was the 3rd one, underneath - so I tended to get that threaded (loosely) first, then the rear, then the front (iirc).

I've not fitted them to my current bike(s) because both bikes have a snapped off bolt in one or other of the mounting holes!

Don’t bother with the 3rd bolt underneath. Especially if you’ve a twin spark engine.

Yeah - I can do that on one side - but unfortunately one of the guards is busted and the rear lug is broken off - so I really need the under-neath bolt!
