Steptoe mod and engine fault warning

FFS

Some of you lot have got no tolerence. The guy only asked a question.

It might having something to do with the type of oil.

:mmmm

A little bit of background though:

-fuel consumption went up since about four months
-starting the engine not as smooth as it used to be. Engine often cuts out after the first couple of meters (downhill).
-warning light went on last week after TBS. Went out right before the mechanic turned the ignition key (second time it does that).
-idle is unstable (between 1050 and 1300 on a hot engine), 950 on a cold engine. Also the brass screws are completely screwed in so no more play... This wasn't the case last time I did TBS.

have you read about balancing the throttle bodies ?

its obvious that something has been 'adjusted' 4 months ago.

fuel consumption up = rich
engine cuts out = rich
brass screws in = rich
idle unstable=rich

either fix it yourself or get someone competent to do it properly ,

why don't yuo tell us what happened 4 months ago ? was it a dealer or did u do it ?

are you capable of doing TBS - cos if u are u need to do it again.

search for the TBS for BMW twins as a pdf and follow that :thumb

read this : http://www.ibmwr.org/r-tech/oilheads/R11Manual/Oilhead_Maintenance_2-25-02.pdf

-4 months ago the bike was at the dealer because it hesitated between 4500 and 5000 rpm. I thought I left it with someone who IS competent.:nono
-Checked the TPS voltage myself afetrwards because I still had the same problems and found it to be at 0.48V . I have resert this to 0.35V. Great dealer:spitfire Speeking of someone competent...
-TBS: done it myself and was doublechecked at the dealer yesterday afternoon: he told me it was spot on ;)
-in the meantime (2 monthsago) I got a Y piece but that was AFTER the engine problems and a faulty coil was discovered by another (now my regular) dealer. Hesitation well sorted:thumb but fuel consumption remained on the high side (could be due to the Y piece now)

I'm no longer a customer at the first dealer since they make too many faults (had some trouble with them before). My new dealer turns out to be the TT dealer (:mmmm ) and mechanics at least explain to you what they will do/did and I have learned a lot there.

Now I have kind of learned to live with the fact the bike is not running 100% properly and I don't bother that much either. If I compare it to some of the problems you guys seem to have with your bikes. The only reason I posted here was I wanted to try the Steptoe mod because some of you praise it to heaven as when it comes to engine smoothness and fuel consumption and as Steptoe states it is a setting for engines w/o CAT.

And all of a sudden that fucking red light went. Went to my laptop and raised the question on this forum.

That's all

Dear Mr Steptoe,

I might not be the technical specialist you are, but I am learning everyday. I am the curious type and that has lead me to successes throughout my life. This kind of attitude is not what I expected of a person like you, but I only know you from this forum.

In the meantime I sorted out what the butterflies are. In fact I knew what they were, the only thing was I didn't know they were called butterflies. Sorry, I am not English native but again, I try my best and I am learning every day. Furthermore I speak fluent Dutch, French, English, German and a little English as you might have noticed. If I misunderstood, my apologies.

I know my limits and I am clever enough not to touch any sealed bolts on a delicate engine like this.

The engine warning light, sorry again for my not knowing the correct terminology, is a red light on my dashboard with a white triangle in it. I was told by my dealer that I better get the bike checked if the warning light is on. Which I did this afternoon.

But again, I might not be the specialist you are.

I don't tend to give up that quick. Speak for yourself Mr nice and easy.:tosser

An elegantly worded and succint riposte - bravo sir!:clap :clap :clap

Being the kind of person that is Tarka worst nightmare ( hes a great bloke when u meet him by the way) I have no idea what half this thread is about BUT... I must say that your written english is fantatsic Demito:thumb

Much better than most of us on here:clap

Does your Y have the sensor in it? If so, there's no reason why that should up the fuel consumption - certainly didn't on mine - slightly the other way, if anything.

I suppose if it doesn't, it could have upset the mix to run rich and drink a bit more?:nenau

What do the plugs look like - black, wet and sooty at all?

I might have an idea of what the problem is ( maybe two problems ;) ) -but seeing as it wasn't the question that was asked, and demito keeps taking one stepforward and twosteps back, getting two dealers involved and then inbetween trying to do things himself and making no end of added problems, then blaming something i suggested, although the bike already had a problem - .

i'll let this one pass .
