Steptoes Moroccan Dash 2

BMW Insurance will give you insurance, a green card. 3rd party only but it's as good as the insurance sold at the port :thumb2

I got my green card off them last year and asked again this year when I renewed (2 weeks ago) and was told they'd still provide it if I asked a couple of weeks before I planed to go away.

Just got my insurance renewal from BWM ins and decided to check if they will cover Morocco. They will not provide cover unless it is a BM run trip.

So, for those who have been before, is there anyone you recommend for annual insurance that will extend to include Morocco - it looks like I am going to need to switch.

Carole Nash sorted me out this week with a Green Card for Morocco. Royal and Sun Alliance and Norwich Union policies will cover Morocco (Royal and Sun alliance - 3rd party cover only - like 'Border' policy). Annual cost of an 'old fart' fully comp, protected no claims ploicy for 2 bikes (' 03 1150GS and '96 R850R) was £279

Have a great time

Sorted with CN

Just renewed for the year and got an addendum?? cover for a 2 week period for Morocco with NU through Carole Nash.:thumb

Not Cheap but fully comp for the duration and full cover inc breakdown for the rest of Euroland for the year.

So........................to get VFM I'll need to do a few trips this year then wont I! :augie

I've just rung BMW Insurance up for a green card for Morrocco.

The lady said as it was a private trip - I am covered automatically - but only third party. Apparently its a new part of the policy they've just introduced.

When I told her that it didnt state I was covered on my insurance certificate, she said "not to worry you are insured- just take the certificate with you."

Now I'm totally confused:blast :blast :blast

Daft question?

What is a "green card"?

Do i need to harrass my insurance company for a "green card", or will the fact my insurance certificate states it's territorial limits be enough to satisfy border checks ect...?

Insurance certificate with territorial limits was fine for me when i went to Morocco. Make sure it does say Morocco too, as they specifically asked me where it was stated.

It obviously depends on who you speak to at BM ins as to what cover you have!

I will see if I can get clarity (and cover) from them. Otherwise I will be off to Carole Nash.

As i understand it you can get 5 days insurance at the morroccan border that covers you for the basics, and thats what i'm planning on doing, as my current insurer won't touch morroco....

(1) The territorial limits shown on the cover note are the list of countries where your insurance covers you. If the country ain't on the list it ain't covered, period.

(2) Devitt, the broker who operate the BuMW insurance scheme will, if you pester them hard enough, arrange for the insurer to extend cover (you receive an endorsement) for Morocco. It is for Third Party Liability only (no own damage) or at least they did for me last year. It took several 'phone calls but got one in the end.

Hi Neal I am on for this trip but I have booked the Weymouth/St Malo ferry on the friday so I would like to meet up with you in Bordeux or Granada if thats OK.

That fine Mr Wapping's spot on....and they will check it at he border....your paperwork does need to specifically list Morocco as a covered country. (usually as the abbreviated 'Mar' code)

It's a crock of poo, 'cos Morocco is party to the agreement on green card insurance and so they should cover you there...but it doesn't work like that :(

I have just spoken to a Sandra at Devitt, the broker who handles the BuMW Motorrad Insurance scheme.

I explained that (like last year) I planned to take my bike to Morocco. Like last year, the purpose was pleasure and not linked to any official BuMW trip. I asked if, like last year, BuMW would be kind enough to provide me with a Green Card or extension to my cover for Morocco. I asked that the cover last for two weeks, giving me a week spare should anything untoward happen.

She checked, I think with her boss, and came back with a charge of £50. I explained that it was free last year. She agreed that this seemed a bit steep and spoke to another person at the insurer, NIG. No charge, it’s free. The cover is Third Party only, which is the minimum to meet Moroccan law. Good enough for me.

I should receive the papers in about seven days.

It's because most UK motor insurers extend cover into the EU states (under the Freedom of Services provision) and automatically into some non-EU neighbours (Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Iceland on my policy). This is a relatively new thing and is one advantage of the EU. Before, one had to pay for multiple ‘Green Cards’ and / or a separate Bail Bond (usually from the AA) for Spain. This automatic extension sounds easy on paper but is actually quite difficult for most insurers to manage. Handing out a legal cover note in Britain is dead straightforward but administering a major claim abroad (it does happen) is very expensive. It’s a very good ‘free’ service insurers now provide.

Morocco, thankfully, does indeed recognise the British ‘Green Card’ (which provides the mininum Third Party liabilty cover only, as required by the foreign country's relevant motor traffic laws) but is not itself an EU country. So, most British insurers take the pragmatic (and ultimately cheaper) route not to cover the country automatically. This does not inconvenience 99% of the population of Britain, who do not take their vehicles into Morocco that often. Insurers are under no obligation to grant the cover at all; maybe we should just be thankful that some of them do and for 'free'.

The same thing applies to Turkey but would change should the Turk’s application to join the EU be accepted.

Same again rang devitts and was told there was no cover for Morroco available, stuck to my guns told them Wappings reply they then got the underwriter on line who aggreed to third party only cover and just to take along my policy. I pointed out it didnt have the Morroco endorsment on it they then agreed to send out a green card

Just heard that the train were booked on is full up = thats Saturday 31st march,
check in time 08:12 - Departure time 08:42. - Arrival time 10:17.

And now the 07.42 train has just been filled. The last slot taken is a GS on our run.

So if you've not yet booked or still thinking about it, your going to be on an early train, and wait at the first service station as you leave the terminal.

How many now?

So who's up for this so far.

I'll be meeting the main group in southern Spain and I think there's one or two joining at other places.

So, with Neil there at least 3 :aidan
