Hi, My 2004 1150GSA ignition barrel is sticking. I'm keeping it working )just) with penetrating oil, but figure its on the way out. As it's a different key to the rest of the barrels on the bike, I'd previuosly enquired at my local BMW dealer about changing it. They put me off saying it was a 4 hour job. Now it's playin up it looks like I'll have to change it.

Anyone got any experience changing barrels, or tips on how I could save the existing barrel. It may just be grit. I guess if I change it I have to buy the new barrel from BMW.
Any info welcome
cheers, Spanner

Take the barrel out, clean it all up, and re-install it.

It takes 30 seconds to remove a barrel with the key inserted in it.

You just need a pin inserted in the right place. Your BMW dealer knows that, or should do. Just tell them you want to take the key barrel out, not the whole unit.

pomm001,
Cheers for the offer of help. The problem has resolved itself as I figure I've washed the grit out of the barrel. I'm still interested in changing the barrel to fit the other locks on the bike. I'll give you a bell if I hit problems.

Boil a kettle, pour boiling water into keyhole, watch all the shite come out of the bottom, add 3 in 1 oil to keyhole or new engine oil, works everytime.

How do you fit the sprung barrel retaining pin?

Hi, I've removed and stripped down the i9gnition barrel which was full of sh1t. Now cleaned and oiled but I'm not sure how to refit without damaging the retaining pin and spring assembly. Does this slide down with the lock barrel or tap in from the outside? Any advice on fitting much appreciated.
cheers Spanner.

I damaged the small retaining spring on re-inserting the barrel and have ordered a new one.
The barrel retaining locating hole goes right through so, as the pin is pushed in when inserting barrel, the spring sticks out the back end.

For now, barrel is inserted sans pin and ignition works but, have to hold barrel when taking key out.

I assume careful insertion trying to hold in pin and spring side as barrel is inserted should prevent me buggering another up.

Spanner will be ecstatic, he's waited 11 years for a reply and can now finish the job and go for a ride.
