Sticking throttle

Just got back from a weird (read scary)evening ride out

Pretty cold out so heated grips set to max.

The throttle tended to stick open and become really stiff to use.
When the grips were set to medium, there was no problem (after a couple of minutes) however when put back to max, the throttle became stiff again and would stay at whatever postion I left it at (instead of returning back)

Has anybody got any ideas why this is happening
can anyone tell me of a way of preventing this? (apart from only riding at medium setting)

As things/ the grips heatup they expand...

common problem with many bikes, but mostly interfers with handle bar end cruise contols, bar weights,or brush guards. Most likely they need to be readjusted to allow for expansion.

Free cruise control ;)

Or just pop into the dealers, it takes a couple of minutes to sort out :)

Kev, Have a look down the side of the injector housings. You will probably find the plastic bung from the suspension arm thing wedged in the throttle linkage. Phil.

These 1200's seem to be a lot of aggro..................... This isn't meant to be confrontational just an observation....

I'd take it back to the dealer. It is an unusual problem - never seen a similar post on the forum. More importantly it is dangerous.

Theres lots about it, usual cause is theres not enough clerance between the grip end and the hand guards, inserting a washer solves the problem.,

I had this and it was down to not enough clearance between the grip and the hand guards.

Should have read between the grip and bar end weight.

Well that was well considered and insightful. Thanks for the contribution.

This also happened on my 650GS for the first few months - then got better without any action. In hindsight, I should've gone to the dealer.

Yep, same thing happened to me. It only occurs on the max setting after longish periods. Removed the bar end weight placed a washer betwen it and the bars....fixed. :thumb

Many thanks to you all for your guidance and advice.

I guess I will have to go to the local dealer (Cardiff) and get this washer adjustment fitted. (asuming they will do it under warantee) I am far to thick to do it myself!!! :o

The only problem I can see is that the waiting list is going to exceed the winter period!!! so the problem will probably go b4 it is fixed (if I do not end up under a bus first!)

If anybody can help me prior to this.........

Cheers to you all
Kev

ps. cheers Dellis for your pointless but noted contribution!!!

pps. Flip, A genuine thanks, however, I am not technically minded so have no idea what/where you are talking about! :o

Not really Dellis. Its just that you are reading the 1200GS problem page here. Dont expect to find lots of "everything fine, no problem" posts on this site - there isnt much point in posting that sort of message, and pages of it would bore the pants off people. So here we post our problems not our lack of them.

My 1200GS has been every bit as problem free as the Hondas I had before- and a great deal more fun. :)
