Think I know the cause, but before I set about taking it all apart,is the any other reason other than lack of lubrication on the splines that will cause the clutch to gradually get stiffer over a few miles? It all starts off o.k,but after a while, even on a motorway run,con end up very notchy.
The bike,an R100gs has done just short of 30,000 since 1990.
Oh yeah...Is it about now that my drive shaft throws in the towel??
Thanks, Martin.

Clutch thrust bearing is sticking in the back of the gearbox when it's hot. Once it's cooled down it's releasing and acting normal. Until it heats up again and sticks. ( thanks to St. Eptoe )

That sounds exactly right. does get better after standing a while. Don`t suppose there`s a simple fix is there?

Replace it. Simple to do, it's at the back of the gerabox.
You need only remove the clutch arm, take the old one out, put the new one in.

Great. Really appreciate your help. Had visions of major works.Bit of a pain on the back of a canal boat!!!!

This boat business is o.k, but I do miss me garage!!
It`s either wet and muddy,or dry and dusty.

I`ve just had a look at the piston and what I take to be a very small thrust bearing that sits inside it. It did look and feel o.k, so I greased it all a little, and put it back.I`ve got a 20mile run to work later so that`ll tell me if I`ve fixed it.
I`m skeptical though. Will order a bearing anyway.
The problem came on after the bike had stood for about 3 weeks in a garage. Normally lives outside. In the mean time I`m of to the gearbox section of the manual!!!

sticky clutch

it is advisable to be very careful if you are going to put oil or grease on the new parts, the problem witgh your old part was likley to have been due to the plastic the part is made of, reacting over time, to oil contamination, causing the plastic to react and swell slightly.

Thanks. I`ll put it in dry and see how it goes.Presumably the actual bearing will be lubricated on assembly at the factory?
