Stiebel Magnum on F800GS 2012

Hi all,

having a problem getting an after market horn to work on my 2012 F800GS. BMW say there has been changes to the CANBUS system and therefore changing OEM to after market will cause problems. I've fitted the Stiebel and at first, before starting the bike it worked, three or four bursts. This morning, after starting, the horn was dead, not a sausage!! Any one had similar problems, and have you managed to resolve them?? There are no error messages showing on the comp!!

I can only imagine that they have reduced the power rating to the horn, so it trips when trying to power something more meaty than the original.

Try refitting the original to see if that works, and if so I suspect you'll need a relay in there so the Stebel runs direct from the battery.

Yes Dave, refitting the original is no problem, works fine. I had no problems with the Stiebel on my F650GS twin, just this 2012 model thats causing a problem. Thanks for your input.

would say it needs to be powered direct from battery using a relay ,if you have done this the relay could be faulty, a common problem if it has been supplied with the horn

Hi all,

just an update on fitting the Stiebel Magnum horn to a F800GS 2012 model. I've shortened the length of the CANBUS cable (may have been a break in the off cut length) and horn working fine. This dispels the story I received from BMW that the fitting of after market electrical components was a no-no due to a change in the CANBUS system. I must also add that although I had had the Stiebel for some two years, fitted to my F650GS twin, Nippy Norman kindly replaced the horn free of charge believing the horn was faulty. I just started to fit Nippys Magnum to my F800gs and found the silver (on mine) plastic cover 1. didn't fit properly and 2. was roughly held in position with duct tape.
The reason being (apparently) that the cover is modified to suit the F800GS otherwise it will not fit in the very small space on the bike?

Was your's like this or am I being picky.

Hi Dave,

don't recall any such issues. The Magnum definitely fits a little more 'snugly' than the OEM horn but other than that nothing unusual noted. Must say, the Magnum certainly gains peoples attention when used in anger!!! A good addition in my opinion.

I found I had to shave a little off the plastic as the cover is not completely round, It then fitted fine and I used a patch lead from the OEM plug to the Magnum weorks fine.

Won't you need to run it through a relay with your existing horn wiring as the trigger ???

My brother has the Stebel Nautilus on his Tiger. It is easy on that because all you have to do unplug the wires from the horn and plug them into a relay, then get power from the battery through the relay to the new horn.

Im thinking about doing the same for my 650, but I didnt know the electrical system was so complicated with its lack of normal fuses. It will be ok, wont it?

I am running mine through the standard wiring with no problems.
If you wish to use a relay then as long as the power feed from the battery is fused it will be fine.

If you want to upgrade the horn then buy a patchlead, it plugs into the existing wiring loom and if you need to refit the original horn ii is a straight unplug one and plug in the other
