Is it me:confused: try as I might, I cannot seem to get every change up, mainly 3rd to 4th smooth, or in, or nearly in or anything at all sometimes. It mainly happens when accelerating fairly "briskly" I have a feeling that with 28,000 mls showing it's not going to improve with miles. I feel a "they all do that sir" coming!

Are you sure that the gear lever is returning to the central position if you are going quickly up the box?
Could your (big) boot being stopping it restoring, or is there a bind in the gear linkage (often a cause of problems changing down).

I was told many moons ago if you want a smooth gearchange on a BMW, preload the gear lever with a light touch of your foot before pulling in the clutch.

In the main this seems to work. By preload it really does mean a light touch and not trying to change gear before pulling in the clutch.

Dunno weather that will help with your 3-4th situation but worth a try?:)

I will give that a go, ta:beer:

I'd get the gear linkage apart and give it a good clean and lube - it can be the root of a number of weird gear-changing problems.

Don't forget to remove (and replace!) the little spring clip - make sure the threaded adjuster is correctly tightened and that it's all clean. It may make a surprising difference...

Mike:)

If it's a superior 1100 you want to check your clutch cable is correctly adjusted. If it's one of those new fangled bikes with hydraulic clutches then you're stuffed and you may as well scrap the bike now.....:P

Taipan's suggestion is the one that works for me. I experience the same problem when shifting from 5th to 6th while accelarating hard. A bit of preload makes all changes much smoother.
