Stock shocks , do I need to upgrade or not ?

I used Firefox in Keighley for my rear shock after it started leaking at 22,00. As other said £190 and a week turnaround.

I'm happy with the standard set up but am considering putting Hyperpro springs on just to firm it up a little. They're around 180 for front and rear from Motorworks, might be an option for you and get Firefox to chuck the new spring on when they rebuild it.

yes,was think about stiffer springing for the rear when I get it fixed, as I weigh a bit!!!

Chaps, I was thinking about going down the spring upgrade route, but was told the stock shock would not have the internals to deal with the up graded spring. Its so bloody confusing !!

Wouldn't of thought that was totally true. If anything with a stronger spring the internals have less to do as movement etc would be reduced. Hyperpro having been making springs etc for years so must be a market for them. Used them on my old gsxr11 in the front and made a big difference.

I put a Hyperpro compression spring on my standard shock many years ago and no problem. Made a useful difference to the ride. Bought and fitted by the good people at Calsport in Birmingham.

I put a hyper pro spring on the rear of my 1150 made in a tubby it made it better for sure. The front however made it ride like a chopper so went back to the original

MCT at Stowmarket is the outfit all the Motorcycling magazines head for when talking set up, rebuilds or replacements.
Not used them yet but I am giving my loved one (the bike, of course) a present this year.

Hi, this has probably been discussed many times, but I'm after fact please !! I ride a 1200GS 09 ESA
So if you have personal experience, would you please share it with me.
I am off on a 3 month tour on 1st May 2016 we are planning to tour black/caspian Seas area. Expecting some minor off roads so thinking the shocks may take some punishment. Do I need to change the shock ? if so which is the best ? Will changing just the spring do the job? I am on a budget so not prepared to throw unnecessary cash at it ! (ie TT/Olins )

From my experience of Romania last August you might find you end up doing a fair bit of "off road" ( at least what we would know as a road) on your journey. We found many roads that to say the least could do with improving, not so much pot holes as craters. Some other roads became gravel tracks from quite long distances. So I think you need good suspension but also the right tyres. I had Pilot 4's fitted, fantastic on tarmac, frightening on loose stuff. If I was lucky enough to go again I would fit more all purpose tyres.

On the subject of suspension, when I fitted an Ohlins rear my wife noticed straight away that the bike was more comfortable for her. I noticed the improved ride quality too but really enjoyed the improvement in the feel of the bike. If you OE shock is in good condition it will be fine, if not replace it with the best you can afford. Enjoy your trip.

John, thanks for that. It sums up what I am thinking to be honest. Replace my knackered OE shocks with the best within my budget. As far as tyres , we are fit Scouts in south Poland . cheers
