.......don't get that many decent riding days in the winter months up here in bonny Scotland.......

Up bright & early today, saw the sunrise & knew it was going to be a great day to ride up the glens to meet everyone at Crieff.....

Jumped aboard.....fired her up & set off......

Came to the tee junction at the end of the road.....NO FEKKIN' BRAKES.....

WTF, thought I and turned the ignition off & on again......

Self-check worked fine so I set off with fully powered brakes......phew!

Went down to Portobello beach to get some decent pix.....

Set off again......NO FEKKIN' BRAKES.....

Bollox, thought I, looks like a 'no biking' day already.........

Rode the two miles home with 'residual braking action' as BMW like to call it......

I like to call it NO FEKKIN' BRAKES.....

An hour later the BMW Assistance guy comes along and insists on RIDING the bike with NO FEKKIN' BRAKES.......

Five minutes later he comes back and says...............

........wait for it...........

'Well, you've got 'residual braking action' at least you can get in to Dundee tomorrow so they can fix it......'

Fekkin' priceless..........!!!

I said, look geezer, this bike's got NO FEKKIN' BRAKES.....I'm riding it NOWHERE!!

BMW Assistance then wanted to send a recovery operative to take it to Motorrad in Glasgow......who are CLOSED on Sundays & Mondays.....

Well, said BMW, we'll store it until Tuesday.........!

Tossers.......

I said, how about collecting it first thing tomorrow and taking it straight up to JC's in Dundee........the supplying dealer etc ........

BMW said they have a policy of recovering to the nearest dealer...even if it's SHUT!!

Anyhow, I said, I'm equidistant to Bishopbriggs & Dundee........Dundee is open tomorrow..........lets get it to Dundee.......

Mmmmm......let me speak to my supervisor, says BMW muppet.......

........piped music for 3 minutes.......

Yes okay, Mr Holland, we'll take it to Dundee, just this once........we really should take it to Glasgow.......but.......

.......so you'll collect it first thing and take it straight to Dundee........

Yes, Mr Holland.....that's what we'll do......

Fek, fek, fek.......somehow I feel as if someone's stolen a winters day ride from me.........NO FEKKIN' BRAKES!!!!

At least I managed to get one pic.....

Cheers

Dutch

(Every cloud has a silver lining, however, as I can now watch Ireland give the Italiano's a good thrashing in what will almost certainly be their (Ireland's) championship year......!!)

Bad luck, Chris. It does make me wonder if there's any real benefit in the servo braking system. I haven't ridden my VFR for a while, but I'm pretty sure that my GS's brakes aren't any more powerful than my VFR with its braided hoses and well maintained calipers and certainly no better than the last ABS equipped VTec that I rode.

This just adds to the concern about the Servo Brakes. :(

From the look of that bike, it looks like it has no brakes.
I'd be carefull with that Dutch.

And if you look really closely, in the background, in Kirkcaldy, you will see a black Audi with about 100 black alarm wires coming out of every orifice.
My day stolen as well !!

Happened to mine - ABS/Servo pump replaced by my dealer Mill at Boldon.
They say they've had "a few" due to a faulty batch of pumps.
Mine still had "residual" front brake but back disappeared totally.
Faulty spare pumps have been recovered, so they say.

Took mine out (phnaar!) yesterday up to the border at Carter Bar and back....and spent more time cleaning than riding.....

...I just want to get a few thousand trouble-free miles so as I can trust it.

Hi Chris,

mine had the same fault after a few hundrew miles. ABS/Servo pump replaced and all's been well for the last 5K.

As a point of interest could you check with the dealers to see what fault code the diagnostics comes up with, as my dealers said the code didn't match anything in their records and simply instructed them to contact BMW Germany.

Thats shit....it ws a great day and like you I had an issue last night so no go for today, really not happy at the moment!

Noticed in the picture you've painted the fairing, looks great, got any more to show us??

Cheers

Nik

Dunno about the code but they plugged in the lap-top and knew what it was straightaway.

:hammer

Becoming More Common

This is serious, its getting more common on all the range of bikes that have this system.

Glad I kept the now much sought after 2002 ABS without servo model.

The time will come when bikes with this servo system will be worthless, I wonder if BMW are working on a replacement system.

Brakes

Mmmmm a bike with brakes that might not work when you want them too:confused: I loved the 12 I test rode, and do want one,but this makes me want to keep my 1150 lardy arse even more.Until you guys have finished all the test riding and they put things right,Ill stick with it.This is serious problem that one day is going to catch someone out,a mate has an 1150rt he has the same problem and has been back and forward to the dealers many times.

Did the light come on to tell you that the brakes had failed?

If you don't know it's happened until you use your brakes that could be too late!

To be fair I didn't notice the rapidly flashing 'brake failure' light until I'd stopped for the first time...fortunately from very low speed.......

Must admit that I'm so used to the self check completing normally and the slow flashing light until the bikes moving that I don't check it every time I set off......

I'll report back on the dealers findings....

I see you've got one of those super transparent huggers that keeps your bike ridiculously clean.

PS Also see you have, what I was told, is an illegel plate as three rows of letter/numbers are no longer allowed- who says we live in a free country. (spose it might be different rules in "foriegn" Scotland).

hi.

could it have been because of the suspect oilly deposit lurking bellow your bike.

just a thought.

You're in luck Andy............1200GS is available without ABS now and comes with plain jane hydraulic brakes............no Servo.

Dutch's experience is exactly why my Servo equipped 1150GS is now sold and bloody good riddance.

JimB, Swooper and myself were debating this yesterday @ Rainbow.

Saw that......it's water that had run off the bash plate.......washed it Friday.........?

I've probably washed the electrics into submission.........

Oh come on!

I work for a well known telecommunications company and drive a mass-produced van. It has servo brakes and ABS.
My employer services it when they can be bothered.
The brakes have never failed.
It is not new technology, just teething troubles due to down-sizing the components.............

That car you drive has servo brakes without a doubt - Get a grip!
