Picked up my first 1200 at the weekend :) (via Ebay) and have been making a long list of all the add-ons that I need or think I need. I've just put my first order through to Nippys, but had to knock a few things of the list as it was a bit of a shock when I got to the 'checkout' . A couple of items look like 'must haves' but I'm not convinced - in particular the new badge-locking device and the replacement fastners for the side panels. Apparently these will stop the badge and side panels being nicked off the bike. The site says that this is a common problem - so my question is has any one had thier badges/panels nicked?

Nope never nicked but I live in the sticks and the bike is garaged, can't say I have ever heard it happening on this site. Do a search some one may have.

I've never heard of anyone having their side panels stolen. Of course the people who want to sell you these gizmos will say it's a "common problem", just like the people who want to sell aftermarket exhausts say that the bike is "underpowered" :D

It might be interesting to compare the price of a badge-locking device to the cost of a new badge :)

I changed the fasteners purely for cosmetic reasons :mmmm

I can't see any real reason for someone to want to nick them,

just another reason to spend on the bike!! :thumb :thumb :thumb

Stolen Badge

I had my nearside badge nicked form the bike in Madrid, last year.
Cant remember what the cost to replace it is, but it will be over £20 when I get round to it.
They tried to get my screen off too, but were foiled by the cunning fasteners that BM use.
On the plus side, the hotel room in the centre of Madrid was £11 per night, so I will have saved more than I have to spend....if that makes sense?

Had both my badges nicked from a motorway service area in Spain.

I complained to BMW that the badges should not be so easily stealable and they replaced them FOC!

Since then I have fitted Touratech protectors so they can't be easily stolen now - unless they remove the panels!

i was concerned how easily they can be removed when i clean my bike and will probably buy the fasteners soon as a precaution, but if anyone did steal the side panels and tried to sell them on this site it would be the same as handing yourself in at the police station

£11 a night? Why the extravagant expense? We stayed in a fonda in Calatayud for £15, but that was for four people in two rooms! Oh, and the "secure car park" we were promised during the touting for business stage turned out to be about half a mile away. Carrying luggage from bike to hotel in 30 degrees was without doubt the hottest I have ever been - sweat quite literally pouring out of cuffs of jacket!

By the way, although I'm generally paranoid about theft of and from bike, I've never heard of anyone having badges or panels nicked. Hope I'm not tempting fate.

Robin.

...just like the locking oil caps to stop people putting sand in your engine - a fool and his money......

.......I did buy the locking oil cap! Oh well......it looks better than the plastic cap

From the replies it seems like the badge/panel locking devices are essential if visiting Spain - no one's mentioned having had them nicked in the UK so far.

What about oil caps - do they disappear in Spain as well?

The oil tank cap from my mates 750 honda was robbed. We reckon it was a few kids, cos there was loads of them running around the beer garden where the bike was parked. It's amazing how some parents let their kids play with bikes. It's worth the tenner for the ol filler cap, and they do look cooler
