Stone Through Radiator....

Doesn't the BMW 'Extended Warranty" cover damaged radiators? I am sure I have read that it does

If it makes you feel any better your misfortune has prompted me to order covers for mine.

How many radiators have been damaged by normal road riding? Its not an epidemic is it?

you have more chance of dropping the bike that a damaged rad. IMHO

We're not allowed to fit radiator covers because Engineer says so.

His theorem is that they will restrict air-flow and cause the engine to overheat.

So far all the bikes I've fitted them to have been fine so this proves Engineer is wrong. I'm certain he's going to be proven wrong on Brexit to but we'll have to wait a little longer to prove this.

You just make stuff up - I have never said the engine will overheat. Fit guards if you are paranoid but the chance of holing the radiators in normal riding is very low.

Malcopopolo is correct, it is hardly an epidemic, in fact it's only a tiny percentage that have been damaged.

P.S. I have already been repeatedly proved right on Brexit :)

Agreed rate of incidence is low.....but....when it does happen its a major problem.

Cause and effect is to perhaps cancel a trip, or be stranded at the roadside.

Best to take some precautions.

I fit rad guards to every bike I own and never had an issue with overheating. I was riding in 40c plus this summer on my GS and S1000R and both have Evotech guards on them....zero overheating. The GS is the coolest running bike I have ever owned.

Eveotech rad guards arrived! The Araldite bodge isn't moving. Theres now talk of perhaps replacing my corroded bike in its entirety, so i'm gonna live with the bodge for another week or two rather than take the day off work to sort the rad, then have the bike replaced!

If it makes you ride with fewer worries then great :)

Good to see you got it going,
any sealant additive may cause a blockage, i would stick with the external fix,

Regarding using radiator guards, engine guards headlight guards,
The idea for me is to continue the journey, especially abroad, as limited timescale,
Replacing a radiator, headlamp or rocker cover is fairly easy roadside,
If the parts are available at that time and able to fetch them,
Bmw assist is good if you have cover, and time to spare for dealer repairs ,
Sometimes the cost of parts is significant, for some not an issue, it is for me,
Its all a matter of choice i see it as peace of mind, some don't,

I had a stone through a radiator on my Triumph Sprint a couple of years ago in the middle of nowhere in France. I could not patch it at the roadside. Yes I had recovery but wasted a day being recovered and 2 days for a Triumph dealer to get and fit a replacement, plus a bill of over £170 for the radiator.

Fitted rad protectors to all my bikes since with no overheating issues even in Spain in over 40 C temps.

Yes unlikely to happen but when it does its a real pain and expensive.

Funny how in the past when the question of radiator and headlight guards have been raised on here the 'experts ' have always jumped up and slagged off he OP's using phrases such as no WC has ever had nor ever will suffer a punctured radiator , it will overheat, it will invalidate your warranty ,the led headlights are made of unbreakable plastic and will never be broken by stones and you are wasting your money.

XR radiators are very exposed as standard and many have been damaged. The last thing I want is to be left stranded at the side of the road in the Alps. From a friend's previous experience with a starter switch problem, BMW offered to lend him a car to continue his journey so what's the likelihood they will be able to replace a radiator quickly.

My 690 Duke radiator is much higher and out of the way so I haven't fitted a guard to this

The very first thing i fitted to my XR within hour of collecting it as they are so exposed. I have the Black guards on mine and you can see how much stone damage has been done to them, i would hate to see what a flimsy radiator and oil cooler would look like without the guards.

I had them on the GSA as well as better safe than stranded
