Stonehenge - what a waste of good land!

Had the displeasure of sitting in very heavy traffic on the A303 from Amesbury until just past that pile of rocks on the field - 90 minutes to crawl about 5 miles

Two points - why the shitty traffic jam when there was no obvious cause on saturday lunchtime?
Also, why visit stonehenge - I looked over whilst slowly plodding past...there were hundreds of people just ambling around the rocks and, so I've heard, they also had to pay for the pleasure

Came past again at about 8pm and there were still people ambling around.

At least when I went as a schoolboy you could touch the stones and climb on them - these folk were kept away from the actual stones by a fence some 20m away

its people like you that screw the roads up all over the country... ignore the scenery and focus on the driving, the roads will flow better then!!!




edit : I bet your one of those that sits in traffic on the opposite side of the motorway and crawls past the accident trying to get a better look

followed a couple of women driving through Devon/Cornwall a good few years back, they moved at a reasonable pace (60-70) until they got on to Dartmoore when the speed instantly dropped to 15mph and all you could see in their car was the pair of them pointing and looking at the landscape totally oblivious to the queue forming behind them...

I drive past nearly every day at present, having come back a few times late at night I feel very sorry for the poor sod that has to stand next to them and guard them all night.

Quite how any one could nick one of them is beyound me!

lots of people go there, might as well knock it down an shove a shoppin mall on it instead,

They're probably more worried about people chipping bits off as a souvenir. Apparently the Victorians were renowned for it.

Only from Amesbury? Wait till the first Friday (and subsequent Fridays) of the school holidays, then see what the traffic is like! Same thing the other way on a Sunday evening.

The A303 is the main route from the Southeast and the smoke to God's own Southwest. Everyone uses it. That section being single carriageway causes a bottleneck - that and the fact that Stonehenge is seen as exciting - but the whole of the single carriageway section is slow. If you are in the know there are ways round it.

Stonehenge was recently voted the UK's 'most disappointing' visitor attraction. I can see why TBH, POS!
