Just got back from Switzerland, whilst out there the off side air intake pipe that connects to the engine blow off. I started the enging after a 10 min stop (following a 1 1/2 hour run) and heard a load pop and felt a knock on my leg. The engine then sounded like death but ran, I pushed the pipe back on about half way and it made it home with no further problems apart from my MPG dropping from 49/50 to 38/39. Any Ideas why it happened??

It will happen if you start the bike on the throttle - handbook states to never start bike by opening the throttle and that is the net result. I watched it happen once, quite impressive. ISTR a Leatherman came to the rescue as BMW Assist's 5 series estate might have taken a while to get to Asturias :augie

It happened to a mate of mine. He thought someone was shooting at him. Popped the intake tube back in, tightned it back up and no problem since. I'll let him know about the "starting on the throttle bit", cheers.

He has a few thumpers and would be prone to do this out of habit.:)

It's caused by a backfire or spitting back in the inlet, often when the mixture is too weak when starting (like if you hold the throttle open a bit by mistake) My old ducati 900ss used to blow the whole carb' off the inlet rubber. Very exciting but quite uncool outside the pub.

cheers

I thought it might have been a back fire but was not awear of the throttle rule (note: READ HAND BOOK)

Thanks to all for the info.

Funny, I met a guy on the tunnel last week who'd had the same happen to him.
