I have a strange noise coming from the front cover on me r80gs sounds like an exhaust blow but it isnt, took altenator off still the same noise, sound almost like a cloths peg on a bike wheel but blowey if you know what I mean noise became faster with engine revs but no louder, looked inside bean tin nothing obvious, sprayed a little wd40 still the same then it disappeared anyone had anything simlar:)

Well this one has flummoxed the experts:comfort

Fraid I cant help much either. The whirry bits under the cover are the alternator rotor and the bits in the bean can, so must be in there somewhere. either that or its not in the cover at all,
Maybe the washing peg has broken now or yer bit of cardboard has fallen off:aidan

my bean can had sand in it ( long story , nowt to do wi me ) that used to make a noise like a knackered horn , took the cover off and blew it out .

does that make any sense , i only post wen am pishd .

sounds like you have a gremlin in there. did you know that wd40 has the same effect as chloroform on gremlins and when he wakes up he will have a thumping headache and be realy pissed off. you may be lucky and find you can chloroform him a few times but when he gets the chance he will finish eating whatever it is and move on to something else unless you catch him. he could reap havok on your machine :hammer there are several methods of getting rid of the gremlin depending on what type. hopefully you have the standard gremlin that came with your machine. in which case some one should be able to tell you where the little bugger is and you can just replace the part that he has been munching on. the other types can be a little more dificult to get rid of as you can see by the many vehicle dismantlers there are around the country. it could be a disenchanted japenese slanty eyed type that has got fed up with modern machinery and accidentaly hopped onto your machine thinking it was a nice old rice grinder. usually these are quite easy to get rid of. you just need to park near to a classic 70's jap bike and they just hop off.(they cant resist the easy to chew jap ally). or it could be italian and looking for some nice italian elecrtical conectors to gnaw on before having a nice long napp. these ar a little more dificult to find because they have long periods of inactivity mid to late afternoon while they sleep their lunch off :jager you need to catch them early AM or late PM they will jump across to any itailan machine be it scooter, coffee machine, electric motor they dont realy care its just got to look good and be italian.
i think these are the main types you have to worry about there are others like the chinese motorcycle gremlin. they tend to stick with their origional machine because they usually live in a family group and stick together untill total desrtuction of the machine (usually before the first MOT) before moving on to your household goods prefrebly made in ROC.

Have you checked the engine breather?

Hi

Have you checked the engine breather? Its under the starter cover at the front and not far behind the front cover.

If it has failed you would get a puffing noise like you describe.

Thats my thoughts as well.
My R90s still has it's original Budgie type breather, had the modified one since 1982 but not got round to fitting it yet,,
After all these years I'd miss me budgie chirping away :rob

I also like Bumpmunchers explanation very much as well :roll

Well found it sorted it went to scotland on it came back on it, no trouble whatsoever took about 2hrs to fix, fixed it with fine grinding paste and wire wool and a 12mm drill bit shaft and a mate and 2 cups of tea.

PS printed out bumpmunchers reply and picked the dog shit off the garden with it.

Many thanx

NB Big thanks to Belper Phil for the moral support and sympathy
