Hi folks, try this one ! i have an 1150 GSA (2002) and have for some time a very slight clunk when pulling away in first gear, then its fine but today put in first gear go to pull away and initially its clonking !! banging and then as soon as you are under way it seems ok ? I have checked the drive shaft and seems to be play free and final drive is fine, so any pointers would be appreciated, off to work now (slowly) ! could it be in the clutch(58000 miles) clanking ? will leave it up to you for any clues.
many thanks

sounds like the abs setting its self (if you have abs)
the two fashing lights should go out at the same time as the clunk

I think it is too noisey to be the abs, its very hard to explain sounds like some thing is very loose , but cannot put my finger on it, may be i will have to take it to main dealer, let them listen but thanks for the info

my 1100 clunks when setting off.

is it a mechanical clunk , or ancillary clunk?
is anything dragging on the brake side?

sounds like a very expensive clunk, as i cannot find anything obvious i think i will have to let bmw listen for me , and when i find out will post a reply as to what it is , many thanks

Stand (side or centre) slightly sticky? I occasionally have this if my centre stand has not fully retracted (thick grease in the cold)

I'll save you the time....
I can hear it from here, it's a very noisy and sounds like a center stand retracting and clanking loudly against the frame as you pull away .

It's the ABS. As everyone keeps telling you.

Thanks i will have to get it looked at !

You need to replace your earplugs...

Mine sounds like a tin can thrown down stairs and has done for the past 4 years I have owned the thing. Somehow it is now strangely reassuring like everything in the universe is as it should be.

What i ment to say was, i will just enjoy riding it and will forget about the ABS RESETTING (CHECK MODE) but ! i needed to ask , this is my toy and i am still learning about it ,rode Harleys for 14 years so you have got to give me time to adjust , never had any brakes on them (abs) or come to think of it they did have brakes but never stopped you, you sort of gradually stopped.
So cancelling indicators and alternator belts plus many other things are still strange to me, and wow electric start ! But thanks for all the info ,thats why i asked those who know.:bow

You get used to the thunk. You might find your 1100 prefers being washed less often than your harleys...

First time I rode mine I stopped to see what had fallen off.

To this day I'm still caught out by the noise it makes. If it is the ABS you should hear it again after a few miles when you stop at a junction and the system performs another check.

Best way to check if it's the ABS is to cancel the ABS on starting and see if it still clunks:augie Or watch for the ABS lights going out:augie:augie.

Very, very common concern is the ABSII 4mph clunk!

After riding Harleys at least the cam chains and air cooled pots won't sound loud to you:D Also welcome back to the other 75% of your riding life by storing the polish for a bit:D:D

Good luck and keep asking...
