Has any one here done the Strata Florida on a 1200GS?

Some good footage of pogos and 4x4s on You Tube doing it, but none on the 1200's.

Bad idea?

I would be very cautious during the wetter times of the year. If it rains then level of the river can rise whilst your halfway along the route.
I was with a couple of irish lads on it once, not sure if Padge was one of them, but one of the 1200s took a good mouthful, and stripped the ringgear as he tried to start it before emptying the pots of water.
And please don't be fooled into it's a 1200 thing, any of the heavier trail bikes aren't safe...... and neither are some pogos...... nor 4x4s come to think of it. A young lass drowned there last year, stuck inside a Land Rover in high water levels.

This wasn't the deepest time of year.

Not me
A little further in than this, with Adventours, and we decided to call it a day at the fatal crossing that swallowed the 4x4

Strata is possible on a 1200GS but the risks are high - the last time I did it I took in water and had a rear puncture due to the sharp bed rock in places.

I must add that I only do it at the heigh of summer when the water is low - the last time was about a month ago and the water was not too high but the GS still swallowed a load.

You could do part of it and turn round at go back and do the long run round. We tend to do this on tours as we cannot risk our riders damaging bikes.

Strata will eventually damage your GS.

Have done it on the HP, as others - by no means at it's deepest as shown by the pic below:

I'd seriously consider a snorkel and the airbox fix if you were going to try it.

You can see some more pics here of Strata and the surounding area:

.

Yeah, was one of the lads with us. There was quite a few 12ADV's on the run. I went through without a bother, but the other lad followed behind me through the same route and managed to suck in some water at a shockingly low level. He was carrying a bit more speed than me.

And all that Charley McGregor sruff of laying the bike on it's side and spewing the water out the spark holes out is not the full story when you see mayonaise inside the level sightglass of someone's pride and joy. Cost him more than a few pennies to fix.

There'll probably be a few along saying they fjord regularly on the 1200, but the air inlet is way too low and I wouldn't recommend taking the chance unless you prep the bike with a snorkle.

A good DRZ will cost you less than a repair bill if you do get water in.
