My local Riders dealer is offering me a good deal on a new SG3 suit, but I've a few questions before I shell out...

I notice that the zip only connects at the back, so presumably there's no watertight join elsewhere between jeans and jacket - how does it do in a downpour? I ride an hour or more each way to work and don't fancy a soggy trip...

Secondly, any suggestions as to how warm the suit is? When it comes to sizing I want to know whether it functions better as an oversuit or whether it's warm enough as it is.

I have used an SG2 suit for about 60'000 miles and have never used the zip to join them up 100% waterproof. In heavy rain make sure you use the the draw strings around the bottom of the jacket. I find it warm enough for year riding.

It's starting to lose it's colour now but it still works fine, when new they can be a bit stiff but that goes in time.

I've got an SG2 suit and I never attach the jacket to trousers. As far as I was aware, that zip is to stop the jacket sliding up if you are sliding down the road on your back - the same with leathers.

I also find it quite warm but I use a proper fleece instead of the inner liner.

Not got wet inside it yet anyway. If I was you, I'd buy an SG2 suit off eBay instead of a brand new one. I did, and I think I spent £400 which is not bad considering my local dealer was looking for €1200 new.

Also on the SG2 suit, if you are going to use the zip for weather protection, my one goes most the way around my waist.

There are two zips to connect to trousers on SG3. One is a short zip - the one you noticed - and the other (on the same bit of material, but slightly higher up) is 3/4 length.

sg3. put your gloves on

Has anyone had trouble with putting thier gloves on ? I think its a great suit and an improvment over the SG2 however, trying to put your gloves on is a problem.

As the size of the cuff and entry method varies from jacket to jacket, and the variation in gloves is similar, I have always tried whatever might be new with existing kit to make sure they are compatible.

That said, the SG3 is very similar to SG2, and because of the design, getting my winter gloves to fit between the inner and outer cuffs is easier than with the summer ones. The double cuff arrangement makes getting gloves on a little harder, but it certainly cuts out both drafts and leaks, making the few extra seconds at the beginning worthwhile.

Riders have a 10% deal off BMW kit at the moment, and 'cause I bought my bike there and service it there too they'll up that to 15%, so a £925 suit will cost me £780.

That takes it down into the range where it's competitively priced with the top end HG stuff, so I thought it was worth a look. I liked the feel of the suit on me when I tried it out, but as I say I do a 140 mile round trip to work when I bike, and want to bike as much through the winter as possible, so I thought I'd come ask here first.

I'm using muffs (cheers Val), so can rely on my summer gloves which are a darn sight easier to get on and off with winter kit on, so the sleeve issue shouldn't be a problem for me.

i got a SG3 troussers and SG2 jacket deal (£726) which works well..and i do zip my jacket to the trousser most of the time...
100% waterproof and so far no problems at all...
yes, its a lot of money, but good stuff and much more understated than the ralley suits!

Gloves again

The size of the cuff is smaller on the SG3. I have tried various gloves summer/winter and getting the gloves on is pain, it then pushes and makes the amour feel tight at the elbow.
I have an SG2 suit and have used it for over 50k miles and have been very pleased and no problem with gloves.
Dispite the gloves issue I think the SG3 is a great suit in all areas. The amour fits snug and stays in place, no drafts and keeps you warm and dry. The best suit I have had.

Hi Steve, I got a very good deal for my new SG3 a few months ago and am very impressed with it. It didnt leak at all in heavy downpour when I rode for about 3 hours non-stop. I found it warm enough without detachable thermal linings at 10 degC and above. It has 2 zips at the back, short and long for attaching pants. Use long zip in colder weather to stop any cold air updraughts to the back and sides! However, I did feel rather uncomfortable riding in hot weather abroad at times at 30 degC or above but would say that SG3 is more ideally suited to all year round in UK or otherwise 3 seasons abroad. Another great bonus SG3 has is that I can use it for skiing holidays too! Perfectly adaptable for snow slopes if you remove arm or knee, back protectors for extra freedom of movement!

I am now considering to add either Comfortshell or new Ralley 3 Pro for summer riding abroad only.

What %-discounts are out there for BMW clothing, when purchasing it together with the bike? 10% is not a whole lot, and my experience with buying other brands helmets, clothing that 25% is achievable.
