Streetpilot 3 and mapsource navigator europe

My first post and i'm begging already.
OK you guys, I have just got from a mate in the USA a used Streetpilot 3 with US base map and North US city navigator.

My cry for help is this, if I want city navigator europe I will have to send away to the US and pay $624.00 for it.

So would any of you guys consider registering this Streetpilot 3 in your name?
This legally allows you to download your navigator europe CD onto my 128mb data card and it would be unlocked.

It seems Garmin do allow a registered user to have 2 Garmin units working from the same mapsource CD and they generate a second unlock code just for it.

Any help would be a godsend.............Doug

Anyways, you'll never get all of Europe on a 128Mb card! Maybe all of the UK, but that's about it.

Thanks for the welcome, it may seem I'm asking something illegal, well not so, check out Garmins website, I don't cheat anyone least of all people who help me, you at least said a polite NO.

One thing I forgot to say was I'm a realist and if someone wants paying for their trouble, well fair enough I can live with that.

It's very simple really, I asked the question and if it's not something your going to do then OK, but don't answer the post!

I didn't get this Garmin free and I knew it would cost for what I'm asking, it came with all the manuals and serial numbers ID numbers ETC.

Hi Doug,

What I don't understand is your $624 and sending the unit to the States. I suppose that's for changing the basemap from US to Atlantic? You don't really need that, you can just buy the European City Navigator CD and load the maps you need. Doesn't matter if there's a US basemap underneath.

It only matters if you drive "off the maps". For example, I drive from home to the south of Spain, and I load a part of Belgium and the south of Spain. That fills up my 128Mb card. Now I can drive through the south of Belgium, all of France and the north of Spain on my basemap, that knows major cities and roads. That's not gonna work with a US basemap. I'd be "in the desert" between the loaded map sections.

So if you're gonna stay in the UK with your US SPIII, with UK maps loaded on the card, you're fine. You'll never notice the unit has a different basemap.

As for doing a double unlock for somebody else, I might consider doing that for a good friend, but not for a complete stranger so to speak. But as I'm in Belgium, I wouldn't be of much use for you anyway.

Hardydoug: I think you'll find that those of us that paid full whack for the Garmin software, will guard it jealously; not least because an increasing number either already have a second unit in the car or are contemplating same....

Don't be a cheapscate, pay up and enjoy the warm inner glow that you'll get from knowing that you've made your personal contribution to Garmin's outrageous profits....

Doug, for me Old Dutchie hits the nail on the head, we have become collectors of these little gadgets and with the incoming 2610, we'er either likely to upgrade by buying a US one and sticking our Mapsource on it or wait for the inevitable must have's and snare a cheap secondhand SPIII or in my case hopefully lay my hands on a GPSV and in all these cases the 2nd unit registration would be required.

There's also an element (as Migsel states) of if I were to go down this road I'd probably need to know the person and be sure they didn't work for Garmin or Software Piracy agency!

Good luck in your search, I have said on this board before it is a way two mates can run two units slightly cheaper so there's no 'beating up or loading on the guilt from this department.

I realise some may be using 2 SP3 units themselves, well fine they can't help me.

Yes I know about it working with the US base map.
By the way the base map is none changable ever!!!!!!

Hardydoug, if I admired your forwardness in originally asking I can't quite share your disillusioned state that you are not cheating in any way, I do know Garmin's position on 2nd unit unlocking and it does not extend to the scenario you are suggesting, in fact to quote the Garmin unlock FAQ back at you

Q. Can I unlock my friend's GPS unit?
A. No. Our license agreement states that the data is valid for your personal use only.

So to go back to my last post, by asking me to register your unit in my name you are asking me to default on the licence agreement and therefore 'cheat'. I doubt anyone coming forward on this would do so publicly so I suggest you give them a way to contact you off-line. Hope that helps.

I take on board your comments and will agree on some of them, I did copy this from Garmin:-
Q. What if I have more than two units?

A. We allow you to unlock up to two of your own personal units. Separate unlock codes are required for each unit, so you will need to complete the unlock process twice. We do allow transfer of data when you upgrade your unit. You may unlock up to two units with one coupon code.

This was why I originally ask someone to register the unit as theirs, If this is cheating, then i'm guilty as charged.
The SP3 stands me at $500.00 if I keep it or zero if I send it back to the USA.
Well i've said enough, if anyone wants to e/mail me direct OK.

The last time I looked $624.00 equates to around £385.00, so my GENUINE offer to do it for £399.00 wasn't so far away.....

Especially when you factor in my time, which as a retired person is absolutely.........................PRICELESS!!!!!

Seriously, though, I agree with Judge.....the interpretation of Garmin's end-user licence is fairly un-ambiguous....and having done a quick ring around half a dozen Garmin users, we all feel the same......NO DEAL!

Anyway, if you're only paying $500.00 for the unit and another $624.00 for a genuine City Navigator for Europe, your total outlay is the equivalent of £695.00 which is quite a lot less than the current best advertised price of a UK sources SPIII de-luxe....

Bottom line is either pay Garmin $624.00 or make a SENSIBLE offer to: [email protected]

I'm a bit suprised by the response of the list. I'm sure EVERYONE on the list has at least some copied software. I think £400 is a rip off for software and I'm sure i'm missing something as you can buy the software from Garmin for cheaper than this. Any Maplins sell the software.

Surely your allowed to make back up copies of the software???

There is something pretty attractive about the idea of having an SPIII with american basemaps and a set of European City Navigator disks/unlock codes - especially if you travel to the States or Canada from time to time (or, like the celt, are planning a trip to South America).

However, as you are discovering, it's not really a cheaper option than to buy a pukka european unit from somewhere in the UK. Unless you are prepared to buy the mapping data and if you really can send the unit back, I would.

Go to somewhere like GPS Warehouse and but a unit and full euro-maps for under £800!

European City Navigator software IS NOT available from Maplins, or any other European supplier.....quoting from Garmin.com...."not for sale in Europe"......

However, 'Roads & Recreation' and 'Metroguide' ARE available here in the UK.....

Hence the gentleman's query........

I'll make you as many copies of my disks as you want. The unlock codes only allow you to download the unlocked maps to your unit (which the software has the serial number of) and one other unit which you own.

Lets narrow this down somewhat, seems i've got some of you offering to do what I want as long as I pay the full £400.00 cost of your CDs, Hmmmm. Thats more or less buying it. Hmmmm

All I need is one 128Mb data card with as much of the UK on it as it will take, I don't travel to Scotland so dont need that bit, and I dont go into Europe so dont need that bit and the cost is still £400.00 approx.?????

Thats £3.12 pence per Mb!!!!!! Whoaaa thats expensive data......
Lets see, I reckon no more than £1 per Mb has got to be enough for me????

Unless you know a better deal.....
