Streetpilot 3 and mapsource navigator europe

I've been humming and hahing about getting the Atlantic or U.S Basemap 2610 streetpilot for a month now. If I go for the Atlantic Basemap 2610, I can get one for around £ 1000, including the European City Navigator C.D and a 256 Mb memory card.

For the U.S Basemap, it works out at +/-£1050.00, but includes a 2610, a 1 Gb & 128Mb memory card, the U.S City Navigator C.D and also European City Navigator software. My theory is that a 1Gb memory card will hold more or less all the European City Navigator maps that I'll be needing in the short term and that 2Gb cards will soon be much cheaper than the current $640 as 4Gb memory cards have just come out ( they are currently $ 1500 and I don't know if the 2610 accepts them ).

After reading this thread and finding out that 2 Streetpilots can be registered on 1 City Navigator CD, if I can find someone who wants a 2610, $300 could be saved by sharing the cost of the City Navigator CD. This puts a U.S Basemap 2610 firmly in the lead for value.

If anyone is interested in getting a 2610, by partnering up with me, it means that a 2610 Streetpilot, a 1Gb memory card, a 128Mb memory card, the U.S and European City Navigator software could be ours for around £ 800.00. Mid-October or early January visits to the U.S are being made, so please PM me if you are interested in this.

European City Navigator software IS NOT available from Maplins, or any other European supplier.....quoting from Garmin.com...."not for sale in Europe"......

However, 'Roads & Recreation' and 'Metroguide' ARE available here in the UK.....

Hence the gentleman's query........:D
What's the difference between European City Navigator and European MetroGuide....?? I'm confused.

Apart from the significant price difference, City Navigator has greater detail content and allows auto-routing on the GPS as well as on your PC at home.

With MetroGuide the autorouting is only available on the PC, so once you've planned your route & uploaded to the GPS/Data Card, you're stuck with it.

For me this is one of the major features of the SPIII/Navigator and it's no doubt for this reason that City Navigator is the included software for both the BMW unit and the SPIII deluxe package, as the other mapping software only serves to compromise the versatility of the GPS as comprehensive aid to navigation and route planning.

MetroGuide is NOT suitable do autorouting. As far as I know, the maps are the same, but if you load them in an SPIII, GPS V or 2610, there's no autorouting available, no turn by turn directions. So it is basically meant for the "older" units. And it has NO unlock codes.

For CityNavigator you can strike the NOT and NO.

You need to be absolutely specific when making comments about Garmins Mapsource mapping products (including version numbers). I know that most of you are in the UK but you have international readers.

I guess the products you are talking about here are the latest versions of City Navigator Europe against Metroguide Europe ?

Just as a matter of interest; Metroguide Australia has significantly better coverage than City Navigator Australia (but does not do auto-routing) and does have an unlock code.

Maps and more Maps

Your right about how many versions there are, it just gets more confusing and expensive.
I have just found out direct from Garmin UK that SP3 will take City Select Europe now.

Now I looked at their compatability list for the SP3 and it says City navigator only.
But lady at Garmin said she's double checked and yes it will work.

I see your in Sydney area, small world as I was there 2 and a bit years ago during the bush fires around Darkes Forrest Etc. and will be returning at the end of next year.
I go stay with relatives in the wollongong area, usually for about 4 weeks at a time.

May just bring the SP3 with me this time.

Tis a pain - the price

Am going to my mums at the end of next week and renting a GS in Brisbane for a week. I woul like to have city navigator but the cost for the Aus edition is ridiculous for a week of travelling. Metro, I could just about argue for but it lacks autorouting even though it is acknowledged as having better city map coverage.

Actually all I want to do is to rent Aus City Nav for 10 days. There has got to be a better way....

offers??????????????

hardydoug

I seem to be loosing the thread here.

I have 2 streetpilot 3's for our business and have the unlock for the UK and also for europe, and the garmin licence allows each unit to have both the UK and Europe unlocked, because they are both registered to the same person.

So what's the problem and why load the data card it still won't work!! will it???

Think you're wrong here. My SP3 came with it included. So it must be available in Europe. It wouldn't make any sense not to sell it. Would it?

As for "City select". As I understand it, "City select is for black & white screens such as GPSV etc.. The "City navigator" is for colour screens such as the SP3. I'd guess it has exactly the same info on it for navigation purposes. If you do use it though, you might find you only get a B & W display on your SP3.

Quite right, Howard, it wouldn't make sense......but Garmin sell the SPIII deluxe & BMW their Motorrad Navigator complete with City Navigator, with all zones unlock....but according to Garmin's own website, plus conversations I've had with authorised Garmin dealers here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, it is most definately NOT for sale as stand alone software anywhere in Europe.

Not even the dealers can give a credible reason why.....but most said...........'It just doesn't make sense!'

I think I'll delve some more.......

This is a really strange situation. The Garmin web site indicates that stand alone purchase outside the USA is not allowed (remember that it is bundled with the SP3 Deluxe).

The Maplin web site does not list it as a stand alone product.
Staples do not list it
http://www.motorsportpromotion.com/gps.shtml show the SP3 at £798 inc Vat but no mapsource
Masonmaps only show CitySelect, MetroEurope and R&R
GPSW don't show City Nav but everything else
Dabs don't list it....

Was going to list the others but my route to the garmin website is down (other Kansas sites are available so perhaps garmin have crashed)

which basically translated means not for me or you unless you are a Government!!!!

strange, I looked in NL, BE, FR and other countries and I could not find it stand-alone

fraid it looks like they have locked it into the SP3 and 2610......

and if you want it you have to buy it in the USof A (did find 1 site in Aus though)

interesting

Oi, Dutchman, you must be as bored as I am!!!! :D :) :( :o

At least I have an excuse, I had a sh*%ty day contract negotiation with a d$%khead who is gonna block a deal because he cannot get his finger out and quantify his risk equation such that we can come to an agreement to mitigate risk exposure....

... now I find that there is a plot afoot to deny UKGS'ers from getting value for money out of Garmin (is Hardydoug part of the CIA's outpost in deepest darkest Blackburn!!!! :beerjug: )

It was all working fine until he posted his mail:rolleyes: Conspiracy!!!!

Thanks Dutchman and MigSel. My unit is a StreetPilot Colormap which does not autoroute. I have also been confused about the Unlock codes but that explains it a bit more.

Have Fun

AndyT:cool:

On the older Streetpilots you cannot load any mapping product that uses an unlock code because the SP has no internal ID code for the unlock code to check against.

the end result

Well this topic sure got some members going, i've been offered all sorts of prices for what I originally requested.

Just to recap I asked if anyone would register my US version SP3 in their name so I could make use of City Navigator Europe, not for free as some thought in the first place but for a small consideration!!!!!!!!

So heres a tale even Garmin might not really want to be common knowledge, after weighing up all the options I decided to buy a new garmin GPS unit, which one? well you would think as I wanted City Navigator Europe for my US version SP3 then I would have to buy another SP3, after all Garmins website states what software is compatible with SP3 and whats not...........NOT SO.............I rang Garmin on a spur of the moment thing and asked this question. "will an SP3 work with City SELECT Europe" A nice lady almost immediatly said.........Yes it will, I also told her my SP3 is a US version will it still work.............She said umm let me ask my boss............Yes it will..........I also asked will I be able to register the used US version SP3 along side my potential new Garmin purchase...........She again said .........Yes.

Now you may be wondering why all the questions to Garmin, well as i've got the SP3 why not buy myself the IQUE 3600 model Garmin GPS for my car.

End result.........
I saved myself a fortune got the software I needed and ended up with 2 working GPS units legally!!!!!

You can buy the City Select EuropeCD for only $299 which works with any SP3 right down to auto routing, rerouting to street level detail.

So to all those who gave me a hard time, have this knowledge totally........ "FREE"........ on me, and to all those who took the time to try and help........ THANKYOU.

Need more info, let me know.

Doug
