Hi all,

I've got a set of the silver magnesium rocker covers for the R1150 series bikes.
I am planning to paint them and stick them on my R1150GSA.

They appear to have a coating on them - like paint or something similar. They are standard, unmodified by anyone - so I assume this a BMW thing.

How do I go about removing this coating before I paint them? Do I have to?

Thanks all,

Rob

Do a search for "stripping rocker covers", as there are several threads on this subject. The short answer is:

1 they are powder coated
2 you cannot chemically dip them as the magnesium will dissolve
3 sand/bead blasting then is fraught as they are easy to hole
4 the most successful method is very time consuming - using abrasives and a Dremel

Sandblasting should be avoided but SODAblast worked for me.
