I recently drilled the filler neck on my 1200GS as listed elsewhere on the site in order to speed up refueling. It works fine, except I can now smell petrol quite strongly above the tank, even when riding the bike.

Everything looks as if it is back where it should be. Anyone have any idea what I've done wrong?

Having done the same mod....

Drilled a hole in the tank? (not likely if you followed the instructions!)
Reassembled the filler cap and neck incorrectly?
Filling it to the brim when you fuel?
Filling it up then parking up - expansion space is compromised by mod and tank can overflow when hot...?

Can't think of any other possibilities off hand.

If I remember correctly, there's an O-ring that you remove when removing the filler neck, however it stretches in use and needs to relax before it's reused. I seem to remember that the official Superlative Siphon Sucker kit has a spare O-ring because of this. I suggest that you remove it and leave it to 'rest' for a while, or replace it with a new one.

I recently did this mod to my 12GS, but i had the foresight to get a new gasket before hand, when i took the the filler neck off the tank i noticed that the new gasket is a new design, maybe for that very reason.
