my bike has always smelled strongly of petrol when put away in the garage but I can find no evidence of a leak anywhere and the dealer says "they all do that .....". The smell is stronger than you used to get with cars like old Minis back in the days of SU carbs - its not faint at all.

anyone had a similar issue?

Mine is a bit like that. Maybe because it's just sitting in an inclosed space like a garage with exposed engine etc etc :nenau

Never noticed it on my previous faired bikes.

Mines exactly the same, used to worry me at first as I have an integral garage that opens onto my kitchen but have got used to it now. I've never managed to find the reason for it.

Was the same with my 1200GS and now with the 1200RT. Don't know why. They do "all do that"!

Did it a bit with my 1150GS and now alot with new 1200RT. I'm going to try and fit an extractor fan. It seems to only happen as the engine cools. Could be due to residual engine heat warming the fuel tank enough for some expansion and fume venting thro' the filler cap (strong petrol smell coming from there!)

Only get that problem when I fill up the tank then park the bike shortly after. It's the engine heating up the tank which causes the gasses to expand and vent through the drain hoses sometimes taking liquid fuel with it. The way round it is to unlock the filler cap which stops the pressure build up in the tank.

Some of the 1150's esp the Adv had a recall on the fuel pipes for this reason....I seem to remember. Had the same problem with the ADV and the dealer did some recall work on the pipe where it fits onto the plastic fuel pipe above the carb on the right(gearbox) side. Look at some of the staining on silver engined 1150's and you will see its a more common problem than they think. Just had mine go again after the work and did it myself with some Wire and a pliers??????????????????????? No probs since.

Sorry to spoil the party :nenau but mine does not smell of petrol when put away in the garage. Only time it has was when I had not closed the filler cap fully after filling up.

Have all those with the problem done the tank filler mod? ie the one where you drill holes in the filler neck? The only thing I have done is remove the rubber tube from the filler. :nenau

Have never noticed this on my 1200GS either - are you certain that the 'quick- release' hoses are correctly connected to the tank? (r.h.s under the side panel). I accidentally wiggled them once when cleaning the bike, they do release very easily!

After a run when the gs12 is put in the garage, I get the hot engine, hot rubber and hot brake smell.. but no petrol. If you can smell fresh petrol you probebly have a small leak somewhere. May be a weeping fuel line joint?, make a formal complaint at your BMW dealer just incase. ;)

Filled up with 24 litres of unleaded(1200GS). Strong smell of petrol. Flew to Mars on the vapours. Must try this again. Meanwhile I've written to claims are us for compensation/ litigation due to travel sickness. Bloody BMs!!!!!! :spitfire

No mod to the filler at all and the pipes seems securely fixed. No obvious signs of a leak anywhere but my pals 2006 bike doesnt smell of petrol at all, so either somethings not right with mine or its yet another (admittedly pretty minor) problem solved after launch rather than before.

The dealer doesnt want to know and to be honest I'm more curious than concerned.
