Stuck in Northern spain with wife sick, need cheapest way to get back to UK

Er... the trip to India, is that flying there, presume so, just to say it can be easy to get a dodgy tum there.. Just saying..

Can you leave the bike for a few days, both fly back to UK, get her settled and then you return to finish a reduced trip.

Speaking as someone who has done the ferry between Spain and UK, and the Bay of Biscay can be treacherous, and may not be a good choice if wife is not well to start with, hopefully in a day or so you can fly.

Best wishes to you both.
Chablis, good point and I tried to remind her of that (giving me the opportunity to continue )
:) but the last time we took that trip the sea was calm, so it follows that it ALWAYS must be ha ha.
I've been all the way round spain several times, now I just want to get off to India if wars permit....

No, by bike. From London which is why I mentioned if wars permitted. Yes it's very likely she'll get Delhi belly, or me for that matter, but that will be an open ended trip and we can stay in one place until recovered, this was a fixed 3 week deal.

How will you get to India? Are the Pakistan borders reopening? I'm off there next year, but am flying to Delhi.
The plan is Europe to Georgia and now that the border to Azerbaijan is open again, across Caspian sa to Kazakhstan all the way to China and into Nepal that way.

Call your Travel insurer. Given the circumstances you have described, they may be able to assist you.

That said, your wife being sick might well require verification from a local doctor / hospital and / or the death (no matter how tragic) of a fighter’s boyfriend’s stepfather might be too remote to satisfy the ‘close relative’ requirement.

If nothing else, it’s free to call your insurer and enquire.
Would this enquiry go down as a claim ?

Only if it becomes a claim. But so what if it does.

That I would not worry about at all, as it will not affect anything else, nor your ability to buy insurance in the future.

Travel insurance is designed specifically to cover (amongst other things) illness and injury when abroad. The insurers of it are usually very efficient and have a wealth of experience, dealing with claims far more complex than yours (hopefully) seems to be.

Ah ok ,
It’s slightly off topic but a few years ago I had a water leak , didn’t know how serious it was so I rang my insurance company to ask if I was covered for exploratory work , I wasn’t. And the excess was big.
Turned out to just be a braided hose under the sink so I fixed it myself.
Go forward a year to my insurance renewal and they had added a claim , despite me only enquiring if I was covered and not making a claim ?

I have to ask the obvious question……….are you taking your tender tummied wife?! Lol
Yes indeed. And I assured her that we would not be coming home as a result of that, we would wait it out whatever was necessary. If it came to it that she felt she couldn't continue, she knows full well she'll be going home alone whilst I continue the trip

You know, being a plumber and receiving feedback from customers about insurance claims, I can almost guarantee they would see that as a claim, paid or not as it needs to fed into their risk algorithms.
I was toying with the idea with respect to above of not claiming but a bird in the hand and all that.
But it looks like they'll pay it.
Regarding increased premiums, we're on a COOP managed current account plan at £18 a month, as that's available to all, I can't see how they can raise that cost.

My understanding from my Pakistani and Indian customers here in West London is that that border is problematic at best and the Kashmir region is to be avoided hence the route I intend to take.
This is a shame as Iran and Pakistan are meant to be epic in terms of friendliness and natural scenery.

My understanding is that it's guaranteed we'll get a dodgy tum, both of us.
Sensible precautions like a Sawyer water filter and choosing as wisely as possible where to eat will help but not eliminate risk.
The issue with this trip was the limited time frame-3 weeks. We stayed 2 nights in a camping in Limoges to test her ability to "rough it" if necessary ( I saw one ride report where two Germans going to India waited 2 weeks in Azerbaijan waiting for the Caspian sea to calm before taking the ferry to Kazakhstan, and luckily they had tents to wait in the port that has limited resources), one night in Northern France another in Southern France and a day to cross over to hotel in Northern spain, so around 5 days plus return left limited time to get to Galicia and leisurely roam around the coast.
The India trip will be more of an open time frame as it'll take what it takes.

We met a RTW lady rider who had done Kaz-Kat on the ferry to Tasmania earlier this year. Seemed an eminently sensible way to get there because even with a NZ passport it would have been risky to do Iran, and Kashmir (which sounds wonderful) was erupting again. She didn't have to travel in convoy, which was a bonus. Good luck with the trip.
