stupid question: 1995 1100GS range on a fuel tank of gas

I had 254 out of my 1999 1100, this was riding conservatively in Morocco, it still hadn't run out when I filled up.

If yours has the plastic tank then they are slightly bigger.
 
Fuel range is especially speed related on these bikes as they are as aerodynamic as a brick. Additionally they are heavy so lots of slowing and then accelerating increases fuel burn.

Cruise along enjoying the view at a constant 50mph and the fuel range will be in the mid 200's. Hills, corners with lots of speed change can drop that range by 100 miles.
 
Varies massively depending on riding style

Over here the fuel light pops on at 130 miles, regular as clockwork. But here is lots of "slow" heavy traffic usage (there is not much scope for filtering over here!). In France at a steady cruising speed can easily get 250 miles even loaded up with luggage.
 
On my old 1100GS loan bike I once ran out of fuel after 116 miles. Everyone who rode it mentioned the performance :D . I tried to find out why it was so “lively” , it wasn’t chipped, everything was bog standard, found out it was once a BMW press bike.. make of that what you will... but it was very very thirsty, one of the reasons I sold it.
 
My 99 1100gs when I had it would need filling at 180miles would be dry at 200 . Over constant 80mph and it would drop to 160 miles or less overall about 40mpg due to lack of 6th gear.
Progress the 1150gs averaged 50mpg and the early 1200gs 55 mpg my 1200rt Lc 58mpg .
 
Around 10 miles for every litre of fuel is a good average.

That’s what I always go by for most bikes 1,000cc or above.

Cue the inevitable: “ I only get 120 to the tank, cos I cane it everywhere, mate!”
 
While it's good to ask, if you already own the bike, why don't you know its tank range?
Haven't you ridden it?
Not gone out for a good day's ride and used a tankful, or simply filled it and then seen at what mileage after a few days that it needed filling again?
Sorry, but I can't help wondering.

Bear in mind that there's a difference between how far it will go on a tankful compared to how far it will go until the last block goes out on the gauge......and how much fuel still remains.
Different bikes can give different results.

That's why you need to find out for yourself.
 
235 miles and still about 3 litres left on my 1100 two up and with luggage. Range is only ever rough - riding over a flat plain on tarmac at 55mph with the wind behind will give a very different result to riding on sand or up an unsurfaced road in the high mountains. Strap a spare gallon on the rack and go for a ride until you run out to get a better idea anyway.

On the road get a couple of fuel bottles if you think it will be an issue (I use a Desert Fox fuel bag which I can fold up when not in use, but may not be legal everywhere), but the reality is, even if you do run out someone will most likely be along who can give you a lift, all part of the fun.

The mantra of fill up every time you see fuel may be helpful, but with modern tech you can easily plan for fuel, assuming the gas station you're aiming for is still open, of course.

This "modern tech"can't be very good if it doesn't tell you if the place is open or not. :D
 
Ha ha, just edited my thread to say just that before I saw your reply. It can happen (once to me in Namibia, burnt down!), more likely they've run out of fuel (Malawi, but got some from a bloke selling out of veggie oil bottles) and are waiting on a delivery, although perhaps not so often in the US.
 
Also, if it is the US, their gallons are smaller than ours.

Yes, 16 fl ozs instead of 20 in the UK. In each country a gallon is 8 of their respective pints.

Edit. I should add that their fluid ounces are different from ours too so a UK gallon is about 1.2 x a US gallon.

There are too many variables
Fuel density
Weight of rider
Condition of bike
Riding style
Speed
Terrain
Air temperature
Air density
Etc.

As has already been said...go ride your bike and work it out for yourself. Don’t bank on someone else’s advice.

You will rue the day you run out of gas miles from any gas station.:nenau
 
I've had 3x 1100GS's of various ages and tunes for over 100k miles... Usually around 10 per litre, up to 11ish if A and B roads... 250 a tank was the most I've seen and about 200 the least... It's a gallon from the light coming on so 35-40 max if you don't want to run out... 45 if you fuck it up and very steady riding may get you 50 if you really, really fuck it up.. All of the above both solo and loaded... Didn't seem to make much of a difference... Only ran out once 1/2 mile short of services and then you can lean the bike over to eek out the last fumes to make it... :rolleyes:
