hi, dont take the piss, but who pays for the first service? is it included in the sale price, as it's only really a check/adjust, or do i still have to pay through the nose......
thanks in advance

Pay through the nose!

I think you'll find that you end up paying for it! Well, at least I did.

On my last jap bike it was free labour and pay for the parts, which was around £40.

With BMW you have to agree with dealer at point of sale. It cost me £100.

That sounds like a SLM price! I will be paying the same for my first service when it is due.

First service

I think that only a rather shortsighted dealer would charge you more than for just the oil filter and oil - about 60 euros here. You are giving him the chance to check that everything is OK - and don't forget thet he probably stuck on all the bits like front wheel, fottrests, pedals, screen etc.

Only paid for the parts when I bought my 2004 GS, unlike my brother who had to pay for the whole service on his Ducati Multistrada bought at the same time.
Best check with the dealer but I'm sure the first service is free except for parts. No doubt someone will be along to correct me in a moment.

1 st service

I paid £239 inc vat for my 1st service at Coopers Tunbridge Wells, I did phone around and the price give or take was the same. Oxford BMW supplied the bike and wanted just under £200 to service, but I live in Kent and the cost to get to Oxford and back would have worked out the same. When I read on here you can get the 1st service for £100 or less I am surprised, cause Vines of Guilford, South London BM in Caterham and the Cannon in Braintree all wanted over £200. Good luck if you can find it cheaper..

Not really stuped miles away, there was a time when the first service was free. Still is with many manufacturers, but no longer BMW.

My dealer (in Malaysia) charged me about 110 pound, work was done in an hour, but I was cahged 2 hour.... why, because its a standard charge sir.

I will go back to them for the 2 yearly checks for the 2 year warranty, then do it myself. apart from the canbus these are simple machines.

Surely not?

We ARE talking about the very FIRST service at 1000 kmw are we? I paid only about 160 euros for the first REAL service at 10,000 kms- including cost of oil etc;;

Have been told that the 600 mile 'service' is £100 ( from SBW ). It also takes a morning as they adjust valve clearances from cold.

great.... buyin my bike from southport superbikes, but live in inverness.... can see gettin a free first service will be fun! either ride 500 miles back for the service, or pay for it at inverness.... choices, choices...:nenau

as you can tell its my first brand new bike, or any vehicle for that matter.........how exciting, and expensive...

My twopennyworth

Two dealers have told me the 600 mile first service is £200 but their Sales departments contribute 50% to the Service Department so actual cost to me would be £100.

But, that was before I placed my order for a new 1200GS (due in 3 -4 weeks - can't wait) and negotiated for a free first service (amongst other things).

I reckon if you're spending five figures plus on a new bike the least they can do is chuck in a free first service!

Incidentally, I was given to understand that the 'running in' oil is a slightly different specification than the normal spec to assist the bedding in process. It may be a load of nonsense but has an element of credibility to it. Anyone out there know for sure?

miles away, there is no need to go back to the dealer you bought it from, you can take it to any BMW bike shop, you pay they service.

Mine was about £120 at North Oxford late last year.

That includes changing the oil in the sealed for life shaft, and valve clearances etc...

I was told it was subsidised by sales.
