Has anyone fitted their own bmw vario top box. I found with amazement that You have to 'dremmel' away part of the rear carrier to allow the bar to fit to the bike. Surely on an official bmw part this is ludicrous. Consequently I have been over zealous with the dremmel and now am faced with a bill for £150 to replace the damaged panel.
NOT IMPRESSED MR BMW :nono

If I remember correctly the tale that was told me, then the original top box mount was simply the plate that fastens to the rear carrier of the 1200. There were then a number of issues with the top box parting company from the mounting plate as there wasn't enough rigidity in the fastening of said plate. A quick fix was to provide a bracket to spread the load, this being attached to the most convenient fixing points already on the bike. These fixing points, the two bolts half covered by the plastic moulding, could be easily accesed by any half competent home mechanic with a dremmel, or conversely BMW could have one of their highly trained engineers fit the box for you, for a small fee.
It seems to me that the "small fee" would have been cheaper. :D

Just in case anybody is interested, I fitted my own top box. :bounce1
