Subframe on a 1150gs vs 1100gs vs 850gs

Hi,

Due to a recent crash I need to replace my R1150GS subframe. To widen my search I'm also looking for a 1100gs frame as it looks the same.
Can anybody confirm that they are a straight swap? Maybe also a 850gs frame will fit?
Bmw OEM diagrams show different part codes for 1150 and 1100/ 850.

Check out RealOEM.com

Enter the VIN number for your bike, search for the subframe part and its number, then cut 'n paste the part number into the search box.

Bingo, it will show all models that use that part :thumb2
 
I seem to remember that the R1150R and Rockster use the same subframe. Not sure on the RT and RS.
 
If it's any use I've got a spare (none crashed) 1150gs subframe. For reasons which I won't bore you with, it will ba available in the next 4-6 weeks. I don't think that you're a subscriber on here so can't pm you but if you're interested, let me know.

Hi Jaak,
Have just suffered the same fate, a woman in a new Mini decided to use my 2002 1150 GS as a brake at a roundabout yesterday, it's off to CW motorcycles in Dorchester, but in case they decide to write it off, I want it back to rebuild her, she's too good at 27000 miles to be scrapped, so I also might be in the market for a subframe, so this post might be useful. Hope you get your bike sorted soon.

As said 1100/850 subframe will not fit, they're identical except the bottom mounting points.

Where it's broken or bent? If it isn't cracked from the shock mount or some extreme case then I'd say you have some fair 70% chance that you can repair and reinforce the old one successfully. I've broken mine as well and repaired/reinforced it successfully.

On a more serious crash (especially when loaded with panniers) scenareo they are prone to bend (frame itself can be relatively easily straightened), and split from the upper joints:

Reinforced. Those are very simple "on-the-road" repairs, but worked wonders.

Was good for many more miles. Using a proper professional welder you can do it much better and stronger.


Maybe you have something similar?
 
Thanks for all the input. I'm probably replacing the subframe but need to find one near me while transport costs from the UK are pretty pricey.

About the bike:

Mine slided into a ditch and rested onto the handlebar, front fairing and subframe.
Fairing has been replaced, handlebar I'm replacing with a fatbar and subframe remains a problem.

I'm not very keen on bending something that can potentially hold inner cracks that can bend open under stress in the middle of nowhere.

Has anyone bent the subframe back into its normal shape and lived to tell the tale?

Yes sir,

After it's been repaired it's also badly bent (crash in Pakistan), visually even worse than yours. Straightening can be a challange though. You must straighten on the bike (unless you make a special bench so the bike-points do not move during straightening) thus you need to do it carefully and slowly not to damage anything other on the bike:

With hydraulic press got the lateral bend right.

With many Pakis we got the angular bend corrected.

This fix worked for a very long time and I can for sure say there wasn't any point replacing it if it's just bent and no damages were done during correcting it.

Just in case I'd just recommend to take the seat off and inspect every critical frame support joint points for time-to-time in the beginning. If it holds for some time over rougher offroad conditions, it'll hold.
