To all you well-seasoned travelers out there - I am going on a non-biking trip to New York at the end Nov/beginning of December, for one week, and would very much like any suggestions of where to stay and visit etc., etc.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Just back from a long weekend

I went in August, it’s very in your face, although it’ll be cooler.
Stay in Manhattan. I’ll list where we went, I didn’t think any of it was a waste of time and we didn’t do upper East or West sides or Roosevelt Island or the heart of Brooklyn or any museums. I was just wowed by the architecture and seeing th8ngs with your own eyes that you’ve only seen on the media.
Took subway to Manhattan during the day on arrival at JFK cheap and no hassle.
Walk over Brooklyn Bridge, join Manhattan side from City Hall subway.
Brooklyn side Dumbo area, TimeOut food hall. Lobster shack near ferry terminal.
Staten Island ferry don’t be put off by crowds, everyone gets on, starboard side for Statue view > island, port side for return.
Wall Street wander, World Trade area, Oculus walk up through Soho avoid main avenues, just nicer.
West Village, Bleeker Street pizza/burger options walk up to Hudson Yards just to see it, it’s become a white elephant.
Central Park
Maceys reasonable. Bloomingdale’s WTF!!!
Wear comfy shoes we walked 60km over three days and used the subway.

if the weather is kind, walk the high line and divert on to the Edge

so many places to eat, many now expect 25% tips.

enjoy

If it's your 1st time in NYC I'd recommend you contact these people asap:-

It's a free service, they'll meet you at your hotel and spend a few hours showing you around whatever interests you and point you in the direction of stuff you might not have thought about. They'll also give you a thorough explanation of how the Subway works which will allow you get around far quicker than walking and help you really get the very best out of your time there.

If you're staying in Central Manhattan this is a great place to eat. We've had many a breakfast in here and it's very popular with New Yorkers heading to work, a great place to people watch and soak up the Big Apple atmosphere. If we're on an evening flight home we always eat here before getting the Subway to J.F.K..:-

For something a bit more special I'd recommend this place. Not cheap but not hideously expensive either (by NYC standards). Not sure about Le Petit Chef thing though, that appears to be a new innovation.

For something more spit and sawdust with a bit of history and great atmosphere try this place:-

Be aware though that New York is incredibly expensive, eye-wateringly so. However much you're budgeting double it, add more and then expect to spend even more still.

Treat yourself to a Chopper from the Airport instead of a cab or town car.

You will still need a car when you land but you will feel like you are in an episode of Billions.

(this is very bad advice)

Been several times and hopefully again come feb, its colder and whilst still busy its not so hectic, whilst we were there my wife googled free tours around New York, you meet at arranged time in dedicated places ie The bronx was one of them and many other places, the guides are uni graduates trying to make a couple of bucks by giving a tip at the end, theres usually a group of people waiting and there really interesting tours, we did a guided tour around Brooklyn and when it finished we went for pizza and sat next to this gentleman whom started up a conversation with me, we sat chatting and when we left i wished him well, he mentioned his wife owns the carousel known as Jane's Carousel, turns out i offered to share my pizza with David Walentas the billionaire, sitting next to him and talking you would have never known.

Many thanks to all those who have contributed with suggestions etc.

I will take them all on board with the assistance of my friend, Google (y):)

Keep 'em coming.................

Definitely a helicopter trip up the Hudson River! Easy enough to get the heliport at the bottom of Manhattan.

Enjoyed my visit, glad I did it, but wouldn't rush back.

Subways are great once you get your bearings

About the post #9....Agree, very expensive to eat, found some great places to eat that were reasonable, pizza bar, breakfast cafe, off the the main areas, but very busy places with fantastic food
Much weird and wonderful stuff...all over around and most of the time
And it was hot for the end of October, in the mid 20's
Now I have been, in no rush to go back but glad I saw it all
