Suitable battery charger

Yes it will do. Not trough socket though. Connect directly to battery. JJH
 
Twice the price of the Oxford one on offer, is it twice as good?

What I really want to know is if anyone uses that model of Oxford charger and at the offer price, is it value for money??

Because I know you're as tight as a duck's arse, Keith, have a look at M&P Acessories.
They're doing the basic Oxford Optimiser for £14.99 in a sale.
I used the same model to keep the battery in my old K100 alive. Worked fine for a couple of years despite the battery being of doubtful origin.
You attach a wired plug to the battery and plug in as required. No effect to the canbus.
Was thinking of getting one myself for the winter. I let mine go with the K100.

what he says, plus you can just walk into Halfords and get one off the shelf for £37 - less if you reserve online with Quidco and maybe even more off with a trade card if they count it as a tool
 
Use the bike regularly and you won't need a charger.
Don't use the bike you'll be paying feck knows what in depreciation insurance etc for no benefit so who cares about 2-1/2p for a battery charger.

Canbus is the fancy electronic Mission Control thing that controls all the electrics on modern BMW bikes, including the accessory socket. If you have a charger that plugs into this socket it needs to be "Canbus compatible" to work properly. If it's not, the bike's computer will simply shut down the socket after a couple of minutes and the battery will stop charging. If you connect direct to the battery (whether via a dedicated "pigtail" or old fashioned croc clips) Canbus doesn't enter into the equation.
 
Thanks Roy, so if I got the optimate 4 from the fcmoto link above at £46 I could charge my 2012 GSA from the socket and it'd do the job nicely?

It will work. Be warned though that if your battery does go flat for whatever reason this charger won't work plugged into the acc socket because the computers will be down. Also read the manual because there is a specific way you need to use these chargers for them to work I. E don't plug in 5 mins after the bike has been switched off or it won't work.

In all honesty I think it's a crap idea and would always recommend charging off a pigtail connected directly to the battery. The choice is yours though.
 
Try this one at only £25. Brilliant. You should keep the engine running when you use it (to preserve your battery) - . Just wire in a Hella/Triumph/BMW plug and take it off the accessory socket - it's designed not to blow the Canbus and it doesn't ... I've used it a few times with no probs - cheap as chips compared with fancy alternatives.
