Suitable trousers?

I may be picking up a GSA in the next week or so, but it might mean a 2hr ride back home incorporating motorways. As I'm not currently a biker I haven't yet bought all my clothing, so what trousers would be a good purchase to start with? I may invest in a really good pair once I've got my bike, but for starters I at least need something on my legs.

Is this a wind up? You have a motorcycle licence and the bike will be taxed, insured MOT'd for your ride home as it's not just around the corner?

Otherwise, trousers are the last thing you should be worried about.

Ha, but I thought they would be the wrong trousers!

Not a wind up, I don't want to ride the 2 hrs home in just jeans, but the kevlar jeans (including Aldi) I've looked at don't seem available in my fat bastid size - 44" waist. ID like some that offer alt least some protection, then when Ive got the bike I can look at getting some decent clothing.

I guess you might be looking at either leather trousers or a more modern fabric pair.
Can I suggest that Sir attends his local motorcycle emporium where he can peruse such items.

Yes, I will certainly be doing just that, in fact I purchased a basic jacket, helmet & gloves today. But rather than just rely upon the sales mans advice for trousers, I thought id ask here first. As mentioned, I'm new to biking and I guess I won't know for sure what type of riding I'll be doing until Ive had my bike for a while. I may get involved in touring, or I might just use the bike for commuting. Either way, i won't know for sure until I've had the bike for a while. I can then upgrade to some clothing that suits. Are leather trousers the only type with protective layers (in the event of a fall)?

Fabric suits also have (some) abrasion resistance and sometimes armour.
For a cheap pair until you decide want you want, have a look at Lidle, Aldi, Macro etc as they sometimes have cheap but useable gear in. Also check out Gumtree and Ebay as there are often second hand bargains to be had.

Can I just add that I think you are completely barking for getting a GSA as your first bike. Let us know when you drop it.

Maybe I could have explained my situation better. Ive been riding on/off for the last 20 yrs, but I've never owned my own bike. Ive ridden various bikes over the years from when I first learnt to ride in the Army on an Armstrong 500 back in the late 80's, through to trials bikes and the occasional Harley. But Ive either had the clothing supplied by my employer, or Ive borrowed it from others. Ive never had to ever think about choosing the clothing, I've just worn what I've been given. But now I'm finally getting my own bike so I need to buy my own clothing.

Maybe my biggest problem will be getting clothing big enough to take armour and to cover my size - 44 waist, 54 chest & 6'3" tall. Surely I'm not the only man giant freak to ride a bike???

Weisse do a good range in bigger sizes. Also JTS do there own and Held gear.
JTS are in Leicester . Google Weisse stockists. I have used both and have been happy with fit and finish. Weisse had the edge.

Personally I've always bought clothing secondhand until such time as I've done enough research to know what I might buy. Some of the quoted prices for helmets, jackets and trousers I saw at the recent London Motorcycle Show are (for me) eye wateringly exorbitant. Far better that they fit well and do the job before splashing out on silly overpriced stuff. Oh helmets, in the main, I do buy new.
