sump guards-what are they for exactly?

Assuming you never go off-road, is there any point in having one fitted apart from making the thing look like it could cross Russia? I can think of several reasons to take it off-the bottom of the engine's impossible to clean with it fitted for a start.
 
Luckily I had one fitted when a lump of metal (fallen from a wagon on the M1) was deflected by the front wheel and it hit the sump guard.

Broke the rubber mounts and knackered the sumpguard totally

However the engine cases were A1 and it did its job

Cheap to replace @ £50, instead of an engine case which would have been damaged and an engine devoid of oil:D

Four bolts should take no more than 5 mins to remove to clean engine and 5 mins to re-attach

Not taxing to do:aidan
 
aka bashplate allows you to bash things but not old folk, women and children
 
Sump gards

Apart from the "macho" look? it also protects the oil filter which could possibly be whacked by an errant rock from the front wheel.
dave gs. ( p.s. you can't see underneath the engine when it's in place so why bother cleaning it?, sides, when it's covered in muck it looks as though you've been using it for what it is for rather than posing.)

EH, on mine it screws completely into the engine :eek:

Oil filters

In my above winge I ment that the oil filter does indeed go into the engine
but if the sump plate is not in place it is exposed albeit in a recess. Oil filters like fuel filters are very flimsy and one bouncing stone will go through it with
disasterous results apart from making a mess. so, wear your sumplate with pride!

I took mine off. Looks better and less weight. Never thought about cleaning down there though.
