Hello fellow tossers . bought new R1200GS last october after 25 years of jap 4 cylinder smoothness . no regrets what so ever , GS is fantastic . however let me get to the point , it may be because ive become used to jap reliability and smoothness but i have two annoying little faults , the first is a back fire when i throttle off , not a major bang which has old ladies diving for cover, but a gentle pop pop pop ,mates riding behind me dont even hear it ,but its definitely there , the second is oil consumption, again , nothing drastic but its using it , BMW mechanic tells me both will disapear after 10,000 miles , the bike as done 7000 at the moment. As anybody out there had the same problem , or is mechanic just telling me what i want to hear .

they do that, burn oil untill they wear in, can take 10-20k miles, have you not asked this already

Mines done over 10,000 miles now, and the oil consumption has slowed from over 1 litre per 1000 miles to 1/2 litre per 1000 miles.

Nearly 11,00 miles now and it still pop's on the over run - they all do it. Oil consumption now negligible.

Got a 1200 now and although it does use oil its no where near as bad as the 1150's. You need shares in an oil company for one of them!!! :rob

Oil consumption will eventually stop after some serious miles have been put on it as for poping and banging....its good isn't it!! :thumb

:rocketwho :bomb :hapybnce: :hapybnce: Pop an after-market straight through can on it and the Poping and banging will get them diving for cover, mine does..... :rocketwho :bomb :hapybnce:

I thik they call it 'character' or something, which smooth Jap fours seem to be very much lacking. :D

I find if you keep the bike on its centre stand when parked up the oil consumption is not that bad.....as for the pop pop pop I think its brilliant (my old 1150GS with y-peice+remus can sounded like a cannon going off) :thumb

Hi

My 1100GS is being fixed having been VFR'ed from behind, I have a Bandit 12 loaner. It's dull as ditchwater. Yes it goes fast, yes it's easier to ride in heavy traffic, but overall it sucks; I WANT MY BIKE BACK!!!!!

Oh yeah, I bought it @ 14K and it's never used any oil. As for poping, go for the loud can and scare the s*$t out of people !!!!! :)
