worked in a bike shop for some years,the xt,s were either good or bad,carb probs and eccesive play due to main end wear ,(caseings) were the main things,the 660,s were the worst. if u got a good un thou,it should run forever,

dont tell em i blew up 3 xts at least the xl600 is still going strong..

Lovely bike, great fun. Here's mine a few years back in Denmark. I got it from a block that had obviously run it into the back of car, new forks and yokes and she was right as rain. I still regret that I let her slip away for 700 quid. The Yahoo group is a good source of info.
