Surefoot side stand Paralever

Well, I’m back to the original side stand, took the time to straighten/ clean up the crash bar, all works fine, my centre stand does as it’s says on the tin, flick down, stays down, weight on, hand on grab handle, push down and swing back, old man grunt a bit if on full tank😎.
I recall that on my old /6’s and /7’s if I loosened the side stand bolt and swung the stand towards the front of the bike, then tighten bolt it would stay down and not self retract. Years ago, I parked my 90s on Driffield Main Street in the approved style, back tyre to the kerb, on the side stand. While in the shop I heard a crash, some old numpty had reversed gently into my bike then driven forwards, CRASH, down went the bike🤬 happy days!
I will see if tightening my centre-stand bolts a tad will help keep it out of the way of the Surefoot in more predictable manner!

The stand mounting holes and the frame location holes can wear into an oval shape over the years causing play and misalignment

I could be mistaken, but all of the aftermarket stands that mount on the rear engine stud will interfere with the main stand on a paralever bike.
In the real world,it makes no odds, leave it resting on the outside of the main stand.
I’m a short arse ,so the ease of deployment is essential.

Edit, the migsel is the same iirc
Almost. Since changing the centre stand, if putting the Surefoot up second it sticks out and down at a dangerous angle, hence the need to do the left/right dance so the Surefoot goes up first. There must be some variations in the design of the centre stand. I'm assuming the replacement I bought was an OEM BMW of the correct spec, but you never know with Motorworks. I've had odd things from them in the past.

The scuff on my sparkly new Surefoot reminds me not to leave it hanging outside the centre stand again. I wasn't even leaning that far over. I have extended mine but only by about 15mm.

Can I confirm this thread relates to the newer surefoot Sidestand for the Paralever.

I have ordered one of these from MW for the new to me 1993 R80GS after having Migsel stands on a R80G/S and a 1995 GSPD.

The bike has the Y-piece but I may need a longer bottom engine bolt.

I now realise the original Sidestand has two positions for attaching the springs (same as Migsel) giving the option for the stand to stay down or swing back up. The latter is a challenge for me on the GS but manageable on a lower suspended R100R.

I saw this video today that confirmed this so I may not need to fit the Surefoot after all.

Hi
Yes that’s the stand, I could not make this fit without damaging the exhaust collector.

I have the Y-piece instead of the collector box but this still looks to be very tight to fit!

It also looks like I need a longer bottom engine bolt for it to fit.

If I do get it fitted I will post photos.

I moved the Sidestand spring to the forward lug but unfortunately it didn’t hold it down as shown in the video (post #26) so I replaced it back on the rear lug.

Hi Gerry,
I just think that it’s poorly designed, once fitted it hangs away from the bike and just sort of “ hovers” near the back wheel. MW accepted a return and full refund so no quibbles there, I think I’ll investigate moving the spring hanger forwards.
Regards

Update:

I fitted the Surefoot Paralever Sidestand to my 1993 R80GS today.

My bike has the Y-piece instead of the collector box fitted however the near side pipe was blocking fitment of the stand.

I resolved this by slackening off the exhaust pipe joints and lowering the system.

I then fitted the Sidestand before clamping up the exhaust system again.

This may resolve the issue where a collector box fowls the stand.

The thickness of the stand bracket made me decide to change the engine mounting bolt for a longer one.

Original bolt is 296mm so I fitted one that’s 305mm. I bought new stainless steel but used longer bolts are available from MW etc.

The stand is much easier for me to use.

Issues:

The main stand needs to be raised before the sidestand but this is not a problem if you remember.

I found the Migsel stand fitted to my GSPD was the same but never found it a problem.

The current nearside footrest stops against the stand bracket raising it upwards by a few degrees.

I am sure that I will resolve this by filing a bit of metal off either the bracket or the underside of the footrest.

I am pleased with this change. 👍

Any reason you didn’t go with a Migsel sidestand again instead of this one?
Just wondering if theMigsel , or this one, is better on a paralever

The Migsel is twice the price so I thought I would try the new Surefoot this time.

A simple solution which works well for me..A strong loop welded on the original side stand shaft, and a thicker foot pad..

Hope the photos are self explanatory..The side stand can be deployed to a secure position using the side kicker whilst still on the bike, a gentle lean to a more upright stance before dismounting..👍

Just ordered a 305mm from Chris Shaw engineering as I to found the rear engine mount bolt a tad to small for my Surefoot stand
