surging on constant throttle

More fun? How's that?

Try it....

For me, it softens the suspension up, reduces the TC levels so you can lift the front and, as it think the TC may be causing the surging reduce or stop that. Not that I suffer much with surging or to be honest any other faults....:thumb

More fun!!

Replacement bike

my 2014 replacement bike from BMW is at the dealer.
They are replacing my surging 2013.

Very pleased, should have the bike in a couple days will report on changes.:beerjug:

Recall for Twist Grip Assembly Change

My dealer has just called me to advise of recall for swopout of throttle twist grip assembly (electronic bit i assume), he didnt know why or if it related to "surging".

They are going to do clutch pushrod mod and test handlebar switch gear as l/h seems iffy sometimes while they have the bike.

Think I might be getting new bike if this doesnt work!!!!!

Somehow I think you'll be keeping your existing bike

update

Well turned in my 2013 and pick up my 2014 yesterday.
Ridden it a full day now will give a overview on how the bikes differ from my point of view.

First of all no surging on the 14. My acceleration is constant. Through 2500-4000 it seemed to push through the rolling surging rev range then hit hard a 4k.
2nd gear would snap the front wheel but it felt no need to leave the ground.

Now its a healthy acceleration full on:beerjug: Feel a tugging at the front rubber even with ASC on. I know rough break in! No cruising ever at 5k and below for me and never any break-in problems.

They said they tweaked the program on the suspension.
The old 1 up in soft position was exactly that soft, a little spongy and when you hit some crapy pavement it felt like it transferred it through the bike instead of suspension, thus SOFT wasn't any constant use in that mode for me.

Well the tweaked front and rear suspension should be changed to the Smooth Setting, more like riding in a BMW car then on a bike. On riding it they tighten it up a bit not so spongy and added more rebound. I'm 240 and it rides the best of any bike i ever had (30 of them) i have had multiply Ohlins sets, Wilber's, Elka etc. and never with a ride like this...I rode aggressive with it and i could actually feel the dynamic action working in the soft mode. Truly a stelar ride very happy. No rear saggie feeling in the rear when riding and it absorbs everything smoothly. Very Happy.

Riding two up I usually have it 2 up mode and in the normal or firm mode. Kept it soft all day on River Road which is a road that gives any bike a work out.

Steering damper, lets say all other GS's are given a 80 point mark for its good steering. Initially i would say you can feel a little numbness in the steering...just a little may taking 3 or 4 points away leaving the bike with a 76 or 77 point value, at the end of the day you cant even feel it any more.

On the plus there is good things.
I have a country highway road were i go to test my bikes after i change anything or just need a quick fix. I been riding the road over 10 years.
First of getting there , the highway off ramp slings shots across in a giant arch, its being repaved and the grooved the whole thing with these 1/2 inch gouges which gives the bikes front end in a real buzz and it wants to walk across with a bit a speed.. did the exit 3 times the bike had some buzz but it kept its line with no pushing out feel. We liked that.

2nd there is square right hand turn i take with a indentation and a little lip on it, It turns into a separation 2 lane road for a bit, i hit about 30-35 with some right side peg input, then counter steering and some left knee into the tank and always end up almost touching , sometimes on the dotted line after hitting the lip. First go at it i was about 1 1/2- 2' from the line, iam thinking the the steering damper is absorbing some of the negative forces and helps my steering and turning in.

Last there is a section of 5 kinda 50 mph open sighted curves. usually after coming up on 4 and 5 i get a cumulative error and end up getting wide in the turns, but this time maintained good position in lane after the 5 swooping bends.

The steering dampener i'm sure is to help handle the more power and the big bike
in the dirt, ruts and such, but you can feel the benefits on road riding. Like it , it will be your friend.

The bike came with Continental Road Attacks, rubber is softer then the Metzler's Next's . Hold nice but think it wont be a long relationship.

BMW upgraded the bike i received with wire spoked wheels along with LED and TPM. Cool.:thumby:

Mine went in today for some bits and I had the latest software updates applied. Although not specific with any print outs, I was informed that the latest engine mapping and suspension updates had been applied.

I rode away not thinking too much about anything, but WOW WOW WOW!!! Road mode suspension feels nicer, less harsh I think and the fueling for it is bloody brilliant. I used to have to go into Rain mode for dealing with slow traffic (stop start and slow 1st gear stuff) where I would notice the usual Surging (Yes I have always experienced this with previous boxers). But - hand on heart, the surging has GONE. I ended up coming a route home deliberately in traffic to see if I was going mad as the bike felt so different; but its so different I thought id mention it on here!!!

Rain mode I haven't tested yet, but Road is fab now; it feels as if its also not as harsh on tiny movements of the throttle, its really that different.

Dynamic is still epic and rain mode still brings the traction control and abs in very early and has a very smooth throttle.

All I can say is - GET IT UPDATED if you haven't been in to your dealer for a while! (Mine was last in July this year for info...so this update is a new one).

Cheers!!! :jager

Interesting - I've just contacted my dealer to have it investigated on mine. Its not a big deal for me really, but I wanted to get it flagged nice and early, so they have a record of it for any possible future issues.
I'll mention the engine mapping update and see what they say.

Just got home...This morning it was 6 degrees and I used "Road" mode straight away. NO surging, sputtering from cold -absolutely brilliant ride in.

Coming home, again a cold engine, straight into town traffic (deliberately) and NO surging etc.

Did the exact route home I usually do and there's a 30mph bit where I normally have to be in 3rd as its mostly an incline; I used to really notice the surging here, however its gone along that route today like a new bike! - In fact, it is a new bike!!!

I also noticed I could get into 6th in this 30mph limit on the straight and the engine didnt "chug chug" and struggle like it used to; dropped it down to 5th and it ran superbly.

VERY VERY happy!.........(wish they could have sorted the fueling like this on my old k1200s; even after 11+ updates BMW couldnt sort it!!!)...
