Survival Knives: recommended quality brands/shops?

My humble view is a Leatherman Super Tool - I have converted dead whole lambs to eatable meat with mine. Fixed the PC and a host of other "chores". Admmittedly I have not had to hack my way through a South American jungle - but I would be prepared to give it a go!

A mate hit a 'Red' in a Suzuki 4X4 summat in the outback many years ago and assures me you can rebuild the front of a Suzuki with a Leatherman and an axe. He does have a picture of the damage that ensued but so far I have manged to avoid seeing it...Chris iow said:

Buy yourself either a leatherman wave or a charge. If you just want a good blade that doesn't take up too much room have a look at the latest Ka Bar lock knife, you can have a straight blade or half serrated, they come in black or desert colours. All the above are robust and should do the job.

As above, Leatherman and instead of a big knife you could get a light weight axe. Hopefully you will be more likely to need to chop a bit of fire wood for the barby than skin an animal. You can't chop wood with a knife but in an emergency you can sharpen an axe enough to cut meat

Exactly how far of the civilised beaten track are you going?
Do you anticipate making your own living accomodation, or even a village perhaps
Seriously, are you anticipating sleeping in the tent / rough most nights? Or only as a last measure, hopefully finding some hostelry for the nights?
Talking of roughing it what pub we going to meet at in the wilderness known as
Maidenhead.

Off -beaten track? Yes, certainly in some areas. We may not be entirely alone, but I suspect it may some way between towns. When we travel down the Ruta 40, along the eastern edge of the Argentine Andes, its rumoured to be quite remote as well as our planned crossing of the Altiplano east of the the Atacama from Chile into Argentina again. The cross over the Andes in the south, when we enter Chile is no doubt far tougher and longer than we expect.
Either way, I don't expect to need said knife for any more than slicing bread or ham, but if things do go wrong, I want to have a small selection of specific, reliable items to see us through and a survival knife is one of them.
What happens if our bike gets nicked, falls overa cliff, catches fire, or if our tent is blown off over the Atlantic by pesky 70mph Patagonian winds. All unlikely, but best have a back-up plan that takes no room and may just save our bacon.
Of course, if all goes well, slicing bacon is the worst we face!!
As for Maidenhead, we can have a survival pint off toward the Chilterns. Last sunday of July is a possible for me, or the second week-end in Aug!!

Some of the best in the world..
Having travelled a lot, used old 2nd world war army knifes in africa, including a cut down 18", lee-enfield bayonette, i still have, great for a small panga/machette, but no use as a general tool..
I would recommend have a look at these.. they are well made, and edges last and price range is good..

All good stuff if you feel you need to carry a survival knife. Whatever it is, just make sure you put it in the luggage that goes in the aircraft hold.
I now have a zipped suitcase and I put my tiny screwdrivers and allen keys right at the top. Easily found, examinded and put back neatly on my skiddies but never back in their box.
Can any one here throw any light on what happens to baggage after it leaves the check-in area?

I generally stick to SOG knives, American, they got the Navy Seals Knife contract, pricey but good quality.
They make a "Bowie" which I need badly!!
Flying out tonight, a quick 10 hours to Frankfurt and a hop to B,ham in time for a warm pint of Bank,s best.

I have been collecting knives for several years now, my choice (for survival) would be either of the following, with the addition of a smaller lockable folding knife or leatherman multi-tool
A kukri from Tora kukri in UK, call him, he will know what you are after.....
