Having read todays MCN on suspension set up i thought i'd have a look at the GS and try to set the STATIC SAG. In MCN & other threads here i've seen that i should be lookin for 22-25mm front & 8-10mm rear.
To check the front i put a cable tie round the fork and pushed it down to the fork seal, then put the bike on the centre stand & measured the gap between fork seal & cable tie. No matter what i did with the pre load adjustment i still had a measurement of 35-40mm at the front. At the back i took a measurement from the top centre of the rear tyre to the underside of the seat unit and got 20-25mm at the back. Is this normal on a GS or am i being a complete muppet and going about this the wrong way?

Setup Engineering in London did a cracking job on my 916 several yeas ago, so I took my GS over for them to help me set it up for my bulk. No joy. These people know conventional forks/shocks backwards (perhaps that's the problem!), but the best they could suggest for telelever and/or paralever was to make the front very soft "to get some fork dive under braking".

So I went back to the original settings and I've left it there ever since - apart from temporary changes for the infrequent occasions the missus gets on the back.

Does anyone here have anything to do with a Boxer racing team? They might be able to help us all...

Are we talking adjustable ohlins on the front or non adjustable OE bm shocks on the front this could your problem!!.The front OE shock only has adjustment for spring tension not ride height/sag.They don't stretch like ohlins thats why you can't make any difference to your sag,if you have got ohlins then your doing something wrong.Andy

If you've got standard shocks and weight in the region of 13 stone then I'd say set it as recomended in the manual and leave alone

I'm an 11 stone short arse using the standard OE suspension. This is my first taste of BMW bikes having come from Jap sports I thought i might be able to improve on the standard settings in the manual, although i have to say i went for a ride at the w/end and was grinning from ear to ear. What a top bike!
Ohlins are expensive so I'll enjoy what I've got for the time being.

Surley if it's in black & white it must be true?
Actually with help I set the sag on my sports bike and it made quite a difference. Felt like front and rear were working together. I believe most sports bikes are not set up properly when they leave the dealer so i thought the same might be true with the GS and I might be able to improve it, although it seems this is not possible without spending money. Having said that i think the bike is still top fun.

oohhhh to be 11 stone only about 5 to go,
do the OE work ok for us pie eaters (well i blame my heavy bones)
or is it up the preload to max? it just feels harsh

suspension sag is a percentage of full travel.

GS has huge travel so static sag is greater than MCN sportbike settings.

static sag is 33% of full travel for front and rear
