Suspension question

Oh poooo

It's gone wrong as i suspected - :blast

Got the old unit off, pleanty of heat and a big breaker bar ...

The old Showa unit was very tight in the swing arm, but with some judicious wiggline it came out

but as many of you have said :blast:blast the outer bearing has moved in to meet the old suspension unit

And sods law says it's a nads whisker too far inboard to get the new Wilburs in :(

ive tried heating it, and using a C cramp & socket to press it back, but it isnt moving.

I dont have a slide hammer so i'm a bit stuck

any ideas :)
Liquid nitrogen, either your local chemists, it's used on verucas or plumbers merchants, to freeze pipes.

Heated metal normally expands, frozen metal usually contracts.

I will be lowering mine tomorrow. If I get into trouble I'll post my solution.

are you talking about the rear shock?
The bottom bush?
If so a heat gun and a slide hammer will remove it. Or you can hammer the bushing in over until it drops free. Heat is the key to get it moving.

I've had the tank off this gs and my previous one numerous times and never broke the connectors, nor have I heard that they break

Right,

Rear done, that bush would not move, had to get a gas torch and a home made puller on it and then it ony wetn about .5mm

that was enough, rear is in,

centre stand and front to go

Well, as predicted, the front has gone right royally tits up :(

The shock is free, but i cant get it out ...

I managed to loosen the belt cover, but some ham fisted twat not me btw has fucked the allen grub screws that hold the cross brace in position

Without that comming out, the belt cover is stuck in place and the fecking shock as well

oh it never rains but fucking pours

:blast

I didn't need to take that cover off, but I did need to remove the engine bars/cross brace ( I didn't put them back on either, standard gs, not gsa) . I had a jack under the engine and lifted it until the front wheel was off the floor.

Die you fecker die !!!!!

Its out!! feckin bolloky shitin bastard turding piece of shite

I ended up strapping the spring to shorten the length and then whacking the rod with a drift to compress it

only needed a few mm but it worked

now to put the front back in

I didn't need to take that cover off, .

I fail to see how you managed this.... I tried … there is no way it'll come out... but when you remove the cover it falls out with out forcing or scratching anything....

Me neither; just undid the crash bars, then l suspended the front end via the handle bars.

Same for the back end, without the handlebars bit obviously.

Id love to remove the crash bars. except the ham fisted numpty who had the bike before me has fucked all the grub screws, so there no way there comming off unless cut off

That said , that might happen ;)

Heat/cold/time and proper penetrating fluid are your friend.

Or the biggest fuck off hammer you have, often doesn't end well for me though

Possibly because your bike is a hexhead, and Andy's is more than likley a TC the front cover is different on the TC if i recall (slimmer )

nice thinking :clap:clap

Yep mine is a TC. I didn't know they were different.

The other thing I thought is if yours are GSA and not GS like mine, isn't the shock longer on GSA?

I just followed the hynes manual.

Just done my rear shock and must say after your posts I was a bit worried, was no where near your epic, mine was out in 10min, the bush pulled back with a bolt and thick washer on outside and new one all back in no bother! whole job was under 40min, Lets hope front goes as well later on! not sure if its because my bike has 12,000 miles on it and hardly seen any bad weather!

Front done, belt cover off, extension and wobble joint, Jack under bash plate and done 15min. Got to say there one of the easiest i have ever done, but I have no corrosion at all on bike and no else messed with it. Just side stand and centre stand to go and set the back end sag up. Give it a test tomorrow. I feel for Santa! Just glad mine went easy!
