Didn't want to keep you in suspense (hah - see what I did there) so here's the suspension update - and an ask for any advice.
So, I've a 2013 GS LC TE with ESA on a 53 plate. Happens to be factory lowered, but I don't think that's particularly important. It's done 27k miles and the suspension is a bit shot - it bottoms out at the rear and the forks wobble when pushed hard round a bumpy corner. It's fine when if you ride smoothly on smooth tarmac, but it needs fixing. The question is, how?
I went to see one suspension shop who said they could rebuild the rear shock, and they'd have a go at the front although they weren't sure it was possible. If it was, the two shocks rebuilt would be about 450 pounds.
I then phoned MCT (who are fully booked until September) and they said that although the shocks can be rebuilt it's not usually successful and the result is often a badly-performing shock. They recommended putting a new set of Wilbers on. This comes in at around 1200 or 1300 pounds fitted. Not great, but at least there'd be the promise of some decent, serviceable suspension.
Next I spoke to some Wilbers specialists who have been really helpful. In fact we've spoken a few times and they've been in touch with the Wilbers factory for me too. The upshot is that Wilbers can't fit their ESA compatible shocks because they aren't supplied with all the parts that need to be replaced on the LC - they can only be fitted to other ESA bikes. They won't fit manually adjusted shocks either, because right now they (Wilbers) don't know how to disable the ESA circuitry on the LC and they're not sure the bike will run right or even safely if the ESA sensors are just unplugged. In fact they're developing a part to do this, but it's not available yet. They're going to find out if there's a likely date for it to appear. (Again this is something they've previously developed for other ESA bikes.)
The one option open to me is replacement BMW shocks at 2400 pounds fitted - a real shock
. Apart from the raw figure, it kind of sticks in the gullet to mortgage the wife and children for the sake of some average quality consumable that can't be serviced.
So, here's the question.
Have you had the suspension modified on an LC with ESA? With non-BMW parts? If so how did you do it? I'm running out of options here!
