Friend is thinking of buying one of these but doesn't really know where to start ( which is the better model etc etc ).
He isn't after a new model, just the normal low mileage jobbie etc so I mentioned I'd ask for him on here ( I know feck all about them as well  ). Any known faults ( except tyre wear I presume:D) etc etc

:beerjug:

My brother has had one since 2000 and loves it to bits. He has had two problems.

1 Stalling when stationery, Throttle Position Sensor replaced under warranty.

2 Side stand kill switch failed (after 8 years).

All in all a very reliable bike. Tyre wear can be a problem if you are heavy handed as you would expect but he is getting about 3-3.5k out a rear.

I've ridden it for about a thousand or so miles and it is a fantastic bike. Keep an eye on the speedo though as it gets you to warp speed in the blink of an eye.

Don't know if this helps but I'm sure the net will bring up plenty of Forums. Like here be on your guard for lots of negative comments, just remember most people have a moan when something goes wrong but the majority of owners never have any major problems. :beerjug:

Only had the K8 but engine wise bullet proof,no problems with mine upto 6k miles, improved all the bits on the previous model ie brakes upgraded, good tool. Get him to have a look on www.ukbusas.org/forum some good guys on there, very friendly.

GS Trev will be along in a minute to explain that they're the only 'real' bike in the world :augie

early model had camchain tensioner mods, and first 4 year had weak subframes, if used with luggage and aftermarket pipes, both mods will have been done, newer models all ok, heard of only 2 blowing up,
take out shares in izumi, and michelin, u will need the discount
prepare for warp speed on full throttle,
ps.
VERY tunable with no loss to reliability
there is no better model than the other, choose a colour and ride it

Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic is all I can say. Had mine for 6 years, a 2000 model, in the best 'copper colour' regret the day I sold it wish I still had it.

The early ones are the fastest as they are the 'pre-restricted' versions before the 300kmh (186mph) embargo came in. Can't remember which year this was but look at the speedo as the early ones went up to 220mph and the newer ones are about 190mph ish!!

Heavy on front brakes, tyres used to scrub out in 1800 miles until I went to the Avon Storms and used to get 4500 miles from a rear! as mentioned before there was a camchain mod that should have been done on the early ones and lots of the aluminium rear subframes were changed for steel ones, although not officially done as a re-call!

If he is smooth on the throttle the chain will last well really.

Don't bother doing a track day on it in the wet!! I did one at Croft one Novemeber and had the back wheel spinning in 2nd gear at 100mph in the damp, not good!!

I used to have a frustrating fuelling problem when riding in very hot climates, like Barcelona in about 44 degrees. Not sure what it was but bloody dangerous. Having said that it only happened 4 times on me other than that the bike was bomb proof

I can't praise the bike highly enough rode thousands of miles, he will not regret buying one, lucky so and so!!

I spent a fair few quid tuning mine to 170 bhp at the back wheel but after a ride to the Alps I decided to put it back to standard as it ran poorly under 4500rpm and that is motoring so thought best to go to standard again.

Those who ask why tune a Hayabusa the answer is simple, you do get used to the power and just crave more!:D

Happy hunting
