Hello friends,
I put sw motech lower bars to my triple blcak.
I went to the dealer to change the engine oil.
Mechanic told me that this crash bar is not recommended. He said this bar in connected to the engine, not to the chassi.
He said it might damage the engine if I drop the bike.
Is this true?

Don't they ALL connect to the engine somewhere or other as the GS does not have a frame?

I use the Motech bars and have 'used' them a few times over the 8 years I've had my bike. Only damage is grazed tubing (the bars themselves).

When I got Knocked off and the bike slid down the road a couple of years ago, if it was not for the SW Motech bars the bike would have been written off.
All the damage that the bike suffered was LH hand guard broken, screen broken and the exhaust badly scraped. The LH crash bar was scraped as well.

The SW Motech bars WILL protect your bike. The dealer is talking crap and just wants you to buy and fit the BMW bars.

The bike has a frame , the BMW bars dont connect to the engine the main fastening is to the bottom of the frame AFAIK.
I had hepco becker bars on a GS and the main connection was to the frame also they were also attached to the engine via otherwise unused threaded holes.
If I remember correctly I bought the H & B bars because

A. The Bmw ones looked as though they were made of cheese.
B. The bars did not require removal to access the engine for any servicing works.

heres fitting instructions, note Torx55 frame/engine mounting bolts on either side.

I just called the dealer here and told them to leave it.
And this guy said that if sething happens to the engine because of this bars, there is no warranty....
I guess they are dying to sell their stock accesories of current GS before the new GS comes.

if your sure you fitted them correctly:blast then i would go back to whoever sold you the bars and clarify they are suitable for your year and model of bike

I had some damage to the threaded hole in the engine and part of a cooling fin tip broke off when my Swm bars encountered the ground.
But the bike would have been worse without them

Today, I went to the BMW to check the difference between SW and bmw original crash bars.
Both have exact same two places to mount themsleves to the bike.
Only thing different is that one part that mounts to the bottom of the engine.
Bmw one has one more piece between the bar and the hole of engine. Mechanic said that this part can bend in order to cause less pressure to the engine. SW mounts without this piece.
However the price is little more than double of SW so I just didn't change anything.

New GS12 TB in Sept 12 - part of the deal was for the Dealer (Park Lane) to fit the lower SW M's before collection. Fitted as agreed and no mention of a warranty risk...:nenau

Hi ryan0708,

hows the cost of these SW bars? I mean as compared to say the US or Uk ?
I am currently in Brazil and headed back to India in a couple of weeks. So was wondering whether I should pick them up here. For sure I cannot get these shipped from US/UK due to the high shipping costs.

Thanks for your time.

Safe riding.

I'd like to get me one of them warantees that cover damage caused by smacking the side of the motorcycle against the ground... Sounds like a good thing to have... I'd willingly pay for the BMW bars to get it too..

Al... :friday
