Instructions supplied with the above crash bars mentions the following torque settings when fitting -
M6 - 9.6Nm
M8 - 23Nm
M10 - 46Nm
I've just recently fitted SW-Motech bars. The bolt / torque settings above that are shown in the leaflet are general readings for these bolt sizes.
(a) The M6 (6 on sheet) will be for the oil cooler line on the nearside (and the same on the offside). The 12GS Maintenance Manual states 8nm for these, so I would go with that. I have.
(b) With regard to the bar that goes under the 'crashbar sump plate' you have two screws: small (16 on sheet) (offside) and large (13 on sheet) (nearside). The maintenance manual says 8nm for the small and 19 nm for the large.
(c) The M10 will be for the bolts for the rear of each bar onto the engine casing. These also hold the "rear frame to engine bottom" I seem to recall 28nm initially then plus a quarter turn. The maintenance manual has 55nm for these bolts.
I didn't loctite the bolts - will just check then periodically.
Given the torque settings in the maintenance manual, methinks SW-Motech were using approximates in their leaflet. It also says in the leaftet "all screws, bolts....should be tightened to the torque specified in the OEM maintenance manual...". Which is the torque settings above.
If you don't have the maintenance manual CD, then
http://www.r1200gs.info/misc/torque.html is a good reference for torque for the 12GS.
Hope this helps.
