Swing arm bracing

I take it this is not standard then.

Suprised anybody would go to all the trouble to harness the 60-70 bhp this monster puts out.

Perhaps next time they try it they could send it to a welder.

Should I leave it, cut it off or replace with a std one?

Does it get in the way/restrict the tyre? If not I'd leave it be, adds to the bikes character.

have them on two of my rs' makes a big difference when fast/hard cornering . don't cut it off, folks pay dearly for those, sell it and buy an original if u are going to cut it off. typically here in the states they go for almost 200$ or more depending on condition. that one is a later year one so 1980 and up, still works on the older ones.

Wasn't it the ultimate source that used to do that modification for you? I'd leave it on, if you think it doesn't handle now wait until you try a standard machine

If you do decide you want a standard swinging arm I'll swap you for a freshly powder coated one with new bearings

They were NOT cheap, around £150 IIRC to have done in the mid 70's....



Paul, I'll have a word with Wackey [the Trike maker] I might need to borrow yours to see if he'd do a batch for me [ he's a Lloyds coded welder ] I'd buy every spare standard swing arm I could from Sherlock etc and see what the price would be, if done to an exact copy, but with GOOD welds


Just don't tell us your Silencers arn't standard , they've' got a Devil pipe or RennSport impressed in them........................

My R90s had the last set of RennSport Silencers from Mike Krauser in 1982, Normal to 3000 rpm, then Hell was let loose Made an Akroprovich race pipe seem silent ... Sadly they were mild steel and had rusted from inside out by 1997 no matter how much care I lavished on them .

You would need to chop half the brake light mounting plate away from your frame to get the later swinging arm to fit in your bike Proff and you need to cut one of the mounting holes off the brake light.

Do it properly

it needs more section - ie triangulation depth - to increase the stiffness and to work with more modern tyres and suspension.

That may have been ok for conti's,TT100's and red arrows back in the 70's but its not really that much more stiffer

PS - surely the subframe is weaker, eventually

I would check that it isnt twisted - that is the usual result when you hit something like that with an idiot stick / arc welder.

It would be subtlety modified using steel specifically suited and sourced..
They do look absolutely right on any twin shock Beemer
I do have a "little" knowledge of modifying Airheads, especially the older twin shock variety..

The subframe is easily modded as it only supports shocker tops, 2 triangular braces same as the 74 BMW racers...
You know the ones?? won Daytona etc

Don't forget this form of bracing, although uglier and shittier looking is used on modern day rice rockets....usually underneath the S/A..........

I would be interested in trying to copy an original or fabricating from a drawing.
Have any of you got the drawing for the mod..... or do you have your own spec that needs fabricating? It would be a nice little job to try.

I did that mod myself to my 1979 R100RS wayeee back in 1988. It didn't help the handling but sure looked the dawgs danglies

We were my son , we were!

The road tires we had had in those days just didnt have the grip to overload anything - all these braces were purely cosmetic additions on road bikes.

Then as now.
