Swingarm pivot pin LHS torque procedure

Good evening

I’ve just replaced the front boot on the swingarm, I’m unsure the sequence to tighten the left hand side pivot pin.

According to the manual it’s to be tightened to 20nM then slackened off and retightened to 7nM. How far do I have to slacken this off before tightening up to the 7nM which is required?

May seem a bit a bit of a silly question but I’m struggling to see any other way apart from almost totally slackening the pivot pin to get to the 7nM.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Whenever I've done this, I always took the initial tightening as a 'seating everything' job. Backed it off a quarter turn, just enough to release the pressure is enough, no real way of saying how far to back it off, a quarter turn is just a best recall of it freeing off... redo it to the 7nm... then lock it off.

Thanks a lot for your reply and advice Roger, I’ll give that a go
 
Seem to recall that I read here the initial 7nm was respecced to 12nm by BMW as the original torque was leaving to much play. Also remember Steptoe I think said to tighten till the play was gone. So either way is good
 
Mechanical ignoramus here, my torque wrench goes both ways so could it be a 'slackening torque' value?
Undo the big nut first then back out the pin. Be careful though there could be threadlock on both, if they aren't moving apply heat from a direct flame but be careful not to damage the paint.
On reassembly put in the fixed pin on the right first ,tighten to the torque value the manual says, personally on my rebuild I just tightened it up really tight and mark with tippex as per Steptoes advice. Go to the left side put in the pin and tighten according to BMW, 7NM but the general rule of thumb recommended is 11-12NM . Mark both the pin and the casing with tippex to make sure it doesn't move when tightening the nut . Hold the pin with the allen key and again tighten the nut up as far as you feel comfortable.

Put tippex on the nut and the casing and you can do the same on the pin on the other side to give you a reference to make sure they haven't moved. I did the swing arm on my rebuild like this last year and to date when I check the tippex marks they haven't moved.

Folks please feel free to correct anything I may have got wrong or to give better advice
