Hi,

I am planning a trip to the Swiss alps in June, anybody got any routes that they have done ? I am staying in Sommand for a week in a chalet so near Swiss and Italian boarder .

Suggestions very welcome please !:nenau:beerjug:

not routes as such, but theres lots of passes, and a day trip to Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen valley is worth the time. although when I looked Sommand appears to be on the French/Swiss border ? if so the the valley route through to Gstaad is pretty, or you could head into France a bit to La Clusaz and take the road up to Manigod

You've read all the trip reports on here then?

This will keep you occupied for a little while http://www.ukgser.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?334-Swiss-Alps-2009-let-s-do-it-11th-18th-Sept-2009 use the search facilty or the regional forums, The Alps is a very popular destination with good reason there's loads on here covering this area, get yourself some Michelin maps and a copy of John Hermann's book http://www.amazon.co.uk/John-Hermann/e/B001K7TTA4 and get busy ;)

Just North of Geneva, the roads through the jura mountains are perfect for bikes. Try to include them in your route. I often ride from Verdun down to Geneva through the smallest roads on the map... 'D' roads in France are awesome.
I have a house in Annecy, spend most of January up at La Clusaz. As beautiful as anywhere in Europe, summer or winter.

You are way off for the best of Switzerland, but in a good place for many French passes, if you get Hermans book look at trip 13 which is a route around Mont Blanc - a stunning run around 7-8 passes.

See my trip reports from 2010 when I rode that route and 2011 when we ran down Route Des Grand Alpes as you are at the North end of that so could take in some of the passes at that end:thumb2

Beautiful, beautiful part of the World ~ I spend 25% of my time in Samoens which is just up the road from where you are (though I agree with what's been said earlier re; Cluses!).

If I could work out 'posting' I'd demonstrate with photos just how beautiful the area is in the Summer months ~ Sixt, Annecy, Excenevex (where you can swim in warm, Evian water) ~ truly a great area whatever the time of year.

Paul B, where you are going is one of the most popular destinations for motorcyclists in Europe.

There are lots of trip reports, stickies, open invite trips (where bods have posted their routes and suggestions) on UKGSer, even before you start looking on the World Wide Web.

My suggestions are:

1. You are not going until June and it's only now the start of February. Time is on your side, so start to use some of it to help yourself plan YOUR holiday, doing things YOU want to do, riding roads YOU want to ride.

2. If you have not got one already, get yourself at least one good quality decent paper map of the area, preferably with your hotel somewhere near the middle. Can't find one with your hotel in the middle? No matter, maps are cheap, buy one or two extra to fill in the gaps.

3. Make contact with Fluffy (who sounds awfully nice) via PM. He seems to know the area well and will show you some pictures. You probably don't need the pictures as you can find them on the internet; but hey, never mind. What you do need from him are his suggestions on routes and rides, the topic of your thread, on which he is completely silent. See if you can squeeze any out of him. While you are at it, strike up something with adventuredon, who has his ideas ready and waiting for you.

4. When you have got a few ideas mapped out, reopen this thread and share your plans with the world at large. They won't bite or at least not in any way that will leave you permanently scared. Let's set you a target of mid-April to have that done by. That will leave you a month to tidy things up and half a month (15 sleeps) to dream about it before setting off.

It really is quite fun and you'll learn a lot as you go along over the next couple of months. You have done the hard bit, choosing and booking your chalet. Now comes the good bit.... Planning the rest of YOUR holiday. There is a thread somewhere in the Travel section that gives hints and tips on how to plan a route, see if you can find it.

PS If you have a Garmin device capable of running with Basecamp or Mapsource, do a search for 'All the routes you'll ever need' or summat like that in the title. It will sort you out. It's in the Travel section.

Hi all,
I will add my Thanks as I am planning to go to the Alps in Mid June too,, Hoping most or all the passes are open,,
I will follow advice here and read up on other trips.. Although I've ridden europe loads of time I always seem to have missed this bit..
:thumb2

Ive only got a 6day pass from U.K so time is tight... made tighter by a Harley riding mate...:thumb

Hog Riders, every group has one.... ahem.

Anyway, if you make it to Samoens head for Bar Savoie in the village square by the fountain, it is a(n) "Harley Stop", plenty of HD's and chopped/customised bikes turn up for lunch on their way further up them there mountains.

Good food, not too badly priced (for Samoens).

Also, Morzine (a short distance away) holds 'Harley Runs' in June/July, very well attended (easily searchable via Google).

Your mate could lose himself there/in beer for a day whilst the rest of you take to the hairpins....

Try Motoroutes it's far more European user base than Best Biking Roads which takes a little longer to join up on.

Hi guys this is my 1st post,,
I am reading this with great interest as I am also planning a trip in mid June taking in the Black Forest entering Switzerland via Konstanz then back up through France( my 1st euro trip),
I haven't "booked" any accommodation and was thinking of just going for b&b, youth hostels, is this a good idea or am I best to start looking and booking accom ???
Thanks guys
