Swiss Alps - we aim to ride all 5 passes - 10 day trip at least to cover the trip overall - Woukd Andermatt be a great place to base ourselves

Good evening all,

Looking to tour through the Swiss Alps at the end of July, we aim to ride all 5 passes. Do any of you lovely bunch have any GPX files you are willing to share or highlights that made your trip special.

We're looking at a 10 day trip at least to cover the trip overall.

Would Andermatt be a great place to base ourselves, or any other place that would best suit.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are more than five passes in the Swiss Alps. Probably around 70, according to Google.

But, that aside, Andermatt is always a popular destination.

It’s the well trodden Andermatt Loop.

As to 10 days? You should be able to do it, but don’t forget you’ll maybe lose a day at either end, getting from home to the Continental coast and the same coming back. If so, that leaves eight days.

Are you definite about wanting to stay in Switzerland?
Have a look at Yodagoat’s videos of his latest Alps passes rides. They are very good and might offer you an alternative or two.

Not sure which passes you want to do but if you stay in Andermatt the Susten , Grimsel and Furka are easily ridden in a easy day with plenty of stops and lunch.
Andermatt form past experience has always been very expensive for hotels

If you’re on about the 5 passes route then you could stay at Inertkirchen. We used the hotel Hof in the middle of the village.
Good location for the route and a good hotel too.

Thanks for the swift response. I didn't realise there were about 70, . I'll do some more in-depth research and narrow it down to probably the best of the bunch. I'm sure it will be a well trodden route as you say, so picking the right spots at the right time, if there are any is crucial.

Thanks for the link to #63, I'll have to a look at that first to grab some ideas.

New member, so I'll definitely search through the forum for tips and advice.

much better to stay this side of Susten pass. I like Meiringen with Parkhotel Sauvage being good. My room had a view of the Reichenbach falls featured in a Sherlock Holmes tale. Sherlock museum next door. It's a bit spendy there now.

Andermatt is a soulless ski resort that is not too attractive in summer.

Thanks Neil, the feedback is that hotels will be expensive. I'll try the usual Air b n b 's and other sites for deals.

Accommodation in cheap-ish in Andermatt, but food and drink is super expensive in Switzerland

yes of course, you will probably find a relatively cheap apartment to rent but the towns on the western side of Susten have more to offer in the summer season due to the lakes and the towns and villages with a bit of history. Andermatt is an ever expanding concrete jungle due to its special tax and residential criteria. It is one of few places in Switzerland where foreign nationals can own property without jumping through substantial bureaucratic hoops.

Switzerland is, as a basic rule of thumb, expensive. It certainly was when I bought a round of seven or more coffees in Davos. That said, the road up was as smooth as a smooth thing. You can’t have the great and the good, banging their arses due to potholes.

We'll look at staying maybe in Andermatt for a night then swiftly move on. As you mentioned, been in Switzerland is about the best views and locations. We'll give the concrete jungles a miss, great info btw.

I’ll hopefully be riding a few Alps passes next week as we are visiting our son who lives in the French Alps. I’ll be riding one of his bikes as we are going in the motorhome.
