I've fixed my old Zumo 550 mount to the cross brace of the handlebar on my 88 100GS. Normally, I'd wire it direct to the battery via a fuse. It occurred that being quite close to the Speedo housing and there already being an 'ole there for an LED (a phony alarm tell tale now removed) it might be neater to wire it to one of the sources of power in there? Any thoughts re that solution please?

The power sources in that area are not fused. You may be able to find a green/black cable to tap into which, according to the wiring diagram, uses a fuse (fed by the green from the inn switch). Look for auxiliary instruments plug.
