Switched relay problem

Was wondering if anybody could help with this problem.
Just fitted some givi spots to my 08 650(twin). The spots come with all the wiring which you connect direct to battery and then connect another wire to a switched circuit to operate a relay. My problem is that even though it is connected to a sŵitched circuit ( the parking light - I have also tried the accessory socket) the lights can still be switched on without turning on the ignition. If I disconnect the switched circuit lead the lights won't work so the relay appears sound. While on the parking light circuit the parking light switches off as normal but leaves the spots on.
I originally tried the lights on my FZX battery connections and brake circuit and all worked as it should.
Any ideas

Sounds as if you are on to the live side of the parking light?

That's what I thought so I did a quick connection to the other wire and the lights came on while the ignition was off and went off when I turned it on.

Hi the wiring loom comes with the givi so it's just a matter of connecting it all.

DO NOT use those fucking scothlock bahstids!

Strip a little wire back and a dab of solder and a nice tight wrap of good insulating tape

TIP: Cut the insulating tape down the middle so it's only 10 mm ish wide and use that to wrap the join Makes a much nicer clean job

The switched lead is only attached temporary at moment till I can Suss out what is going wrong, looking at that diagram it might be better to use the low beam instead of the parking light ( used because I saw it on another thread ) but why would the accessory socket work in the same way.
I like to solder joints but not sure I can get in to the limited area in headlight shell.

The accessory socket stays "live" for around 5mins after the ignition is switched off - useful if powering a satnav that you don't want to reset if you are just switching off for a couple of minutes ie. at the petrol station.

Just finished my 60 hour week and got chance to mess about, looking at circuit diagram I realised that the supplied wiring must have 2 earth wires wired together at some point in the loom, so if the positive and negative wires were wrong that would give me the effect of two circuits, so swapped them around and all works great. The wires had been labelled wrongly by the previous owner. Oh and thanks for the split insulating tip it worked a treat
