Symptoms of failing FD

Forgive my ignorance as I'm new to BMs and shaft drive as it happens, but there is reports on various forums (including this one) of FD failures on the 1200gs, now how or what are the symptoms of the FD failing and is there anyway I can check for it, or even prevent it?

Change the final drive fluid every 6000 miles at service.
Check all seals regularly for weakage / misting.
Check bearing wear / play by spinning rear wheel and listening for any grumbling of the bearings and hold the wheel top and bottom and try to rock.

Thanks for that, I'm going to start having a go at stripping it the weekend, just removing wheels etc, basic stuff to start with, no gearbox removals yet
